About Sam

Ever since I was younger, as a student myself, I have always had the innate ability and passion to help other students gain success if I knew I had the capability to support and add value to their ventures. This passion ignited my journey to becoming a qualified teacher, which originates at university where I offered my services as a private tutor in Maths. Over the course of five years I had the opportunity to work with over 30 students, supporting them consistently on a weekly basis to improve their confidence and understanding of both Maths and Computing. It was because of this that I took the first step to becoming a qualified teacher. My experience as a tutor gave me great insight into what helps students learn and this was witnessed by the teacher training providers in the demonstration lesson I had to conduct for them. They were particularly impressed with how quickly I was able to develop a positive rapport with students and gain both their trust and respect in a short period of time. This ability to connect with students is what nurtured a deepening passion and ten years later I am now leading part of my department in developing Key Stage 4 teaching in Maths as well as mentoring new, aspiring teachers to become the best practitioners they can be.

About the lesson

My lessons are the culmination of all the research I've conducted and the experience I've gained through my work as a secondary school and college teacher. As previously mentioned, I have ten years of formal teaching experience (both delivering and leading in teaching), as well as a further five years tutoring privately. I have had the opportunity to work with students of all abilities and levels of confidence and together they've been able to make outstanding progress, ultimately opening the door to careers and courses that would have been much more challenging in accessing without my intervention.

All my lessons are carefully curated and sequenced to cover the respective curricula, taking advantage of connections that help develop strong foundation of understanding that enables students to build on their prior knowledge and embed the content deeply. A typical session typically takes 60 minutes and incorporated a started activity that connects to prior knowledge, leading into the delivery of the new content followed by deliberate practice that is designed to be easily accessible and grows in difficulty to stretch and challenge the students. At the end the there is a consolidation task that helps illustrate to the student what they have learned and how well they understand it.

I work well with all students and I pride myself on the casual and relaxed demeanor I demonstrate to help the students feel comfortable in our sessions, for the purpose of improving their engagement and willingness to participate in the sessions. Rather than considering the session as an additional and chore-like activity, they see it more as a fun and relaxed learning opportunity.All my previous students have been receptive to this approach and as a result I've been able to have excellent retention is bookings.

I cater to students from KS3 up to A Level.
