About Francis
I have been playing the flute since I was 9 years old and have dedicated much of my life to music. I achieved A+ results in all of my AMEB examinations, including Grade 8, and received a Premier's Perfect Score of 50 in VCE Music Investigation. Throughout my musical journey, I have performed with numerous orchestras and ensembles, including university orchestras at Monash University, and I currently perform with a Melbourne-based orchestra alongside fellow healthcare professionals and experienced musicians.
I have been tutoring flute privately since I was 16 years old and have worked with students of varying ages and experience levels. Teaching has always been one of my greatest passions because I find immense joy in helping students grow in confidence, overcome challenges, and discover their own love for music.
Professionally, I work as a qualified radiographer, a role that has further strengthened my communication skills, patience, and ability to support people from diverse backgrounds. These qualities naturally extend into my teaching. I strive to create a safe, encouraging, and professional learning environment where every student feels valued, supported, and empowered to reach their potential.

My teaching philosophy goes beyond learning notes and technique. I encourage students to think of the flute as an artist's palette, using tone colour, dynamics, articulation, and vibrato to create expression and tell a story through music. I aim to develop strong technical foundations while fostering creativity, musicality, and confidence.
Lessons are tailored to each student's individual goals, whether that be AMEB examinations, school music programs, auditions, ensemble participation, or simply learning for enjoyment. A typical lesson incorporates technique, repertoire, sight-reading, and musicianship skills, while maintaining a supportive and engaging learning environment.
I believe students learn best when they feel comfortable making mistakes and asking questions. As both a healthcare professional and educator, I value empathy, patience, and positive reinforcement. My goal is to help students become not only skilled flautists, but confident and expressive musicians who genuinely enjoy the learning process.
