About Katalyn

Bonjour, I'm Kat. I'm a native French speaker and a fully qualified Modern Foreign Languages teacher with QTS, a PGCE, a Maîtrise in French Literature and a Bachelor's degree in Français Langue Étrangère.
I have nine years' experience teaching French in Asia, including in universities and at the Alliance Française in Hong Kong and mainland China. I also have two years' experience teaching in UK secondary schools.
I became a teacher because I enjoy helping people feel that French is not as confusing or intimidating as it first seems. I especially like working with students who feel nervous, rusty or overwhelmed, and helping them rebuild confidence step by step.
I bring a calm, structured and encouraging approach to my lessons. I care about clear explanations, active practice and steady progress, but I also want students to enjoy using the language and feel comfortable making mistakes.
Outside of lessons, I create French learning content online, which keeps me thinking constantly about how to explain things clearly and make the language click. I've built my whole life around French across three countries, and I love sharing that enthusiasm with the people I teach.

About the lesson

My lessons are structured, practical and adapted to each learner’s level, goals and confidence. I use the CEFR framework from A1 to C1 to help students understand where they are, track their progress and know what to work on next.

My teaching approach is communicative: I aim to put students in situations where they actively use French from the first lesson, rather than only memorising rules. At the same time, I keep grammar clear, logical and manageable.

I like using clear examples, visuals and simple illustrations to make grammar, vocabulary and sentence structure easier to understand. Lessons usually include explanation, guided practice, correction, speaking practice and real use of the language.

A typical lesson lasts 60 minutes, with 45-minute or 90-minute options available depending on the student’s needs. I teach adults and teenagers, from complete beginners to advanced learners, including GCSE, DELF, DALF and TEF-style exam preparation.
