About Sally

Hello, everyone! I'm Sally. Nice to meet you :) I'm a qualified CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) teacher (obtained in 2018).

I studied in Japan and worked full-time (as a teacher) in Tokyo, Japan. I’ve taught English in five Japanese public junior high schools for 3 years and tutored private students in Japan before moving to the U.K..

I was a part-time tutor in a secondary school in Hong Kong. With 8 years of teaching experience, I understand the challenges that second language learners encounter when learning a new language. Until now, I've taught over 400 private students from the U.K., Hong Kong, and Japan (including kindergarteners, primary school kids, secondary school students, college and university students, and adults up to 78 years old).

I'm currently working in higher education, and every day, I communicate with home and international students as well as the academics across different departments. Therefore, I am only available to teach in the late afternoon during weekdays, and on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Please feel free to contact me for available time slots as I have work from home days as well.

Most students are beginners while some are intermediate, JLPT Japanese/Cantonese/EFL learners. It doesn't matter whether you're a beginner or not. We can take it slow and start learning from scratch. Once you get the hang of it, you'll progress gradually :)

About the lesson

My Teaching Styles:-

At the beginning of the lesson, I would set the goal(s) of learning a new language with students, and discuss the main areas (i.e. reading/listening/writing/speaking/pronunciation) that students would like to focus on and improve in class.

As for lessons, I would explain grammar points, which are taken from 2 main Japanese textbooks: "GENKI" as well as "Minnano Nihongo". I teach students with images and daily situations as examples to help them understand the language and culture, so students are able to memorise and apply grammar, vocabulary and expressions better.

Based on your interests, I can also provide some tailor-made materials (e.g. Conversations, travel, etc.) to help you understand better. Sometimes I make use of anime, songs, movie clips and manga in class to help students develop their interests and joy in learning a new language.

Regarding homework, I would prepare customised exercise like vocabulary list, or reading exercises, games, JLPT questions or sentence-making activities for my students.
