About Abigail

Hello! I am a piano teacher with over 4 years of experience teaching more than 200 students of all ages and levels, from young children having their first encounter with a musical instrument through to adult students working on advanced repertoire. Piano teaching has been my vocation for as long as I can remember — I love everything about it, from the detailed technical problem-solving of helping a student learn to play a difficult passage cleanly, to the broader musical conversations about interpretation, style, and expression that become possible as students develop. I teach classical repertoire from the Renaissance through to the present day, jazz and popular styles, and improvisation. I prepare students for ABRSM, Trinity, and RCM grade examinations as well as for music college entrance auditions. I also teach a significant number of adult learners who are playing piano simply for the joy of it, with no examination goal in mind, and I find these lessons some of the most musically rewarding I deliver. My students range from those who have never touched a piano before to those who have been playing for many years and want more advanced technical and musical guidance. For every student, the experience of working with me is personalized to their specific level, goals, and musical personality. I am patient with those who find progress slow, ambitious for those who can move quickly, and always genuinely enthusiastic about the music we work on together.

Piano teaching, done well, addresses three things simultaneously: the physical technique that allows the instrument to be played with control, fluency, and expressiveness; the musical understanding that allows the player to make meaningful interpretive decisions; and the mental skills — reading music, internalizing rhythm, listening critically to one's own sound — that allow everything to develop beyond the surface level. I work on all three in every lesson, because they are not sequential stages but continuously interacting dimensions of pianistic development. My technical teaching focuses on the foundations that underpin everything else: hand position, finger independence, wrist flexibility, and arm weight. I do not impose a single rigid technique but work with each student's natural physiology to develop an approach that is efficient, ergonomic, and sustainable. I introduce technical exercises alongside repertoire from the beginning, because exercises only become meaningful when students understand what musical problem they are solving. I select repertoire carefully for each student, choosing pieces that are appropriately challenging, musically rewarding, and that address the specific technical and musical issues that need to be developed at each stage. I also cover music theory thoroughly, because students who understand theory play with far more awareness and far greater ability to learn new pieces quickly and accurately. Sight reading is developed systematically throughout, as it is one of the most undervalued skills in piano learning and one of the most practically valuable.
