About Sofia
Hello, students!
I have 4 years of teaching experience. My current position is working with Dyslexic, ADHD, Autistic etc. students, ages 5-14, to guide them on their reading journeys. I provide reading intervention through a very accredited and well-known company. We use kids’ visualization of letters to help them learn how to read more fluently, which is life-changing!
I am qualified to teach reading intervention, English, psychology, and Spanish.
I have studied Spanish since eighth grade and all the way through undergrad. Additionally, I studied abroad in Spain and I had a host grandmother who only speaks Spanish. Another immersion opportunity was that all of my classes were in Spanish. Finally, I had an internship at an ABA center, from which I learned a lot. Again, everyone spoke primarily in Spanish at the ABA center.
I also have experience as a bilingual, kindergarten teacher's aide. It was an ESL position, and the classroom teacher admired my gift for handling challenging behaviors in a trauma-informed, neurodiversity-affirming, gentle, and patient way. The classroom teacher and I are still in touch to this day!
Behavior is communication. I have a very warm and neurodiversity-affirming style of handling children’s behaviors and their emotions. There is always a *reason* why someone is acting the way that they do, and as teachers, it is our responsibility to teach children ways of healthily coping with situations and their feelings. We have the power to be safe adults that they can rely on for coregulation, which means finding their calm, in their time of need.
I also was an undergraduate TA for a psychopathology class, in which I helped students to organize their ideas and questions for Q&A panelists as a part of their projects. The students were in small groups of 4-5 undergrads, and we met on a weekly basis to discuss their project progress, and any questions that they had.
Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or concerns you may have. Together, let's make this semester a rewarding and transformative experience. We can do hard things!
Warm regards,
Sofia

My teaching approach is gentle, patient, trauma-informed, and neurodiversity-affirming. "Trauma-informed" means that I am very intentional about every seemingly micro interaction with students. Many students have enough trauma as it is, so I try to do as much as I can to make the tutoring space a safe environment.
"Neurodiversity-affirming" refers to ways that one can affirm students' learning processes and empower them for their strengths, e.g., avoiding the use of rewards as much as possible, not policing students' eye contact, and nurturing students when they are experiencing big emotions. Behavior is communication. As teachers, it is our responsibility to teach children healthy coping mechanisms. We have the power to be safe adults that they can rely on for coregulation, which means finding their calm, in their time of need.
My teaching techniques include Socratic questioning, positive praise with feedback, interactive discussions, checks for understanding, and student-led learning.
I am willing to work with all grade levels of students, preschoolers through adults, but my favorite age groups are elementary and middle schoolers. I teach reading intervention, English, psychology, and Spanish.
