About Stephen
Who Am I? - Psychologist, tutor and writer
I really enjoy teaching psychology! I am a mature tutor with a background in business and consultancy but for the last decade I have been studying and working in psychology. My current academic project is investigating the Contemporary Scientific History of Meditation. I have many years of paid teaching experience (including meditation and English). My key skill is to make psychology easy to understand and enjoyable to study. I hold a BSc Psychology (First), MSc Cognitive Psychology and Neuroscience (Merit) and I am a graduate member of the BPS (MBPsS). I have also completed HE psychology modules in: Advanced Statistics, Brain Science, Neurodegeneration, Addiction, Forensic Psychology and Mental Health. I write and blog about all matters psychological particularly, mindfulness, dementia and the gut-brain axis, I'm also a long standing student of Buddhist psychology (Tsema) and a teacher of Brain Renewal Meditation.
My academic experience has included designing and conducting qualitative and quantitative experiments at undergraduate and post graduate levels. I have provided extensive support in recent years in the proof reading of essays and dissertations, particularly for students whose first language is not English.

Teaching Approach - Making psychology simple and enjoyable
Formal structured lessons linked to specific study objectives. I teach people of all ages and levels including GCSE, AS and A levels, undergraduates and MSc students. I hold a Master's in cognitive psychology and neuroscience, and am currently writing a scientific history of meditation as a PhD project. I can provide face to face lessons to individuals or groups, support for distance learners via Skype (Open University students welcome). Psychology is about human behaviour therefore it is a subject we can all understand. Self confidence underpins progress in learning, this leads to a real world comprehension of psychological concepts from which in-depth knowledge cascades down. Learning is reliant on effort and engagement within a supportive framework. Monitoring and assessment are used to identify strengths and weaknesses, ensuring lessons offer the maximum educational value.
