About Victoria
Progressive rock pulled me in during university, when a friend played me an album that completely rearranged how I thought about guitar. What started as fascination slowly turned into years of dedicated study, both formal and self-directed. Balancing structured coursework with obsessive personal practice taught me discipline I still lean on heavily today. That same disciplined curiosity now shapes how I guide students through technically demanding material.
Working with both school students and busy professionals means constantly reworking how I explain complex ideas depending on available time and attention. I never assume unlimited practice hours, since many of my adult students juggle demanding schedules around their lessons. What I find most rewarding is watching a student finally nail a tricky time signature after weeks of quiet frustration. That breakthrough moment usually reflects real growth far beyond just technical skill.
I still study progressive rock guitar myself, often picking apart new pieces during personal practice time. Staying a student of the genre keeps my teaching sharp and genuinely informed. Lessons often adjust around whatever technical challenge a student is currently chasing, whether rhythmic or melodic. My hope remains constant, that students leave feeling capable of tackling complexity without losing their love for playing.

Odd time signatures scare most beginners before they even try one, so I introduce progressive rock rhythms slowly, breaking complex counts into smaller, manageable chunks. Basic chord voicings come first, kept deliberately simple so students can focus entirely on counting rather than finger placement. Once counting feels natural, I layer in syncopated accents borrowed from progressive rock, stretching a student's sense of timing gradually. This slow build prevents the frustration that usually comes from jumping into complex rhythms too early.
As confidence grows, technical exercises take center stage, including sweep picking basics and extended chord shapes common in the genre. School students and working professionals both respond well to structured practice routines, though I adjust pacing depending on available practice time during the week. I introduce tapping techniques carefully here too, always prioritising clean execution over flashy speed. Recording short practice segments becomes a regular habit, helping students catch rhythmic slips that are easy to miss while playing live.
Mastering complexity takes real patience, and I remind students of that whenever frustration creeps in. Breaking difficult passages into tiny sections almost always works better than repeatedly attempting the whole piece. Music students genuinely enjoy stays central to practice, keeping motivation steady through technically demanding material. My focus throughout remains building real precision without losing the enjoyment of playing altogether.
