About Matt

I graduated from the University of Queensland with a PhD in Physics and started working as a software developer. After having roles such as senior developer, team leader and architect I had the opportunity to move into a manager role eventually running a team of 50 employees. In management roles, I have found that the most rewarding aspects were the development of the people and teams reporting to me as well as streamlining project development and methodology processes. I have had the privilege of working with many extremely bright people and have contributed to their development and career advancement through ongoing mentoring. Having been around the Brisbane IT market for well over 20 years I feel like I have seen everything and am qualified to provide advice. Personally, I have been the President of the Queensland Rocketry Society for 10 years and have contributed to the development of the club and members while working with local and remote councils on launch site management and so on.

About the lesson

My coaching and mentoring follow two approaches:

1. An analysis of your skills and weaknesses, a comparison of your skills to those needed for the desired role, and the development of a career plan including a timeline to achieve the desired skills

2. Regular conversations to discuss day to day strategies to manage people and workloads and to discuss progress against the career plan

Length of sessions can be anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours

Successfully completed residential course in management from AGSM, Diploma of Business in Management from Chifley Business School and various AIM, Career Express, etc. courses

Since 2005 I have mentored many team members, team leaders and managers resulting in successful career transitions and promotions. managed / mentored many remote teams (US / India)., transitioned departments to new methodologies and built high performing teams

Lessons are for early career / new graduates through to experienced middle managers
