About Marlane
I am a professional violinist and educator based in Melbourne, with a career spanning performance, teaching, and mentoring musicians of all ages—from beginners through to pre-professional players.
As a performer, I have worked with some of Australia’s leading orchestras and chamber ensembles, and have also performed internationally. Alongside this, I maintain an active teaching practice, working with students across a wide range of levels, including those preparing for AMEB examinations (including AMusA and LMusA), auditions, competitions, and entry into tertiary music programs.
My approach to teaching is shaped by both my performance experience and my belief that music education is about far more than learning notes on a page. I am deeply interested in how students develop as musicians—how they listen, think, practice, and ultimately learn to guide themselves.
I aim to help students build not only strong technical foundations, but also confidence, independence, and musical awareness. A key part of my teaching is supporting students to become their own best teacher over time, developing the tools to solve problems, refine their practice, and express themselves more freely through their instrument.
I also bring a strong focus to performance preparation, mindset, posture, and performance psychology, helping students feel more grounded and confident in high-pressure situations such as exams and auditions.
My work is centered on creating thoughtful, structured, and supportive learning environments where musicians of all ages can grow into capable, expressive and self-directed artists.

My lessons are designed to support each student as an individual, combining strong technical foundations with thoughtful, expressive music-making.
Alongside violin technique and repertoire, I place a strong emphasis on how to practise effectively. Students learn how to structure their practice, set meaningful goals, and develop consistency—skills that lead to real, lasting progress.
A key part of my teaching is helping students learn how to think for themselves as musicians—to listen critically, solve problems independently, and develop the tools to become their own best teacher over time.
I also integrate elements of performance psychology, posture, and nervous system awareness, helping students feel more confident, grounded, and at ease when they play.
I work with a range of students, including those preparing for AMEB examinations (including AMusA and LMusA), auditions, competitions, and entry into tertiary music programs, as well as students who simply want to deepen their playing and musical understanding.
Lessons are supportive, focused, and tailored to the student’s level and goals—whether they are just beginning or working at an advanced level.
My aim is not only to help students play well, but to help them become confident, independent and expressive musicians.

As an advanced student learning online, I was specifically looking for someone who could go beyond surface-level teaching—and that’s exactly what I found here. I wanted real guidance around career pathways, as well as a deeper understanding of performance coaching, mindset, and technical refinement, and this experience delivered on all fronts.
What stood out most was the balance between high-level technical detail and freedom of expression. Instead of feeling restricted by technique, I actually felt more released in my playing. The way concepts were broken down made it possible to refine subtle elements of my technique while still maintaining musicality and individuality.
The sessions around mindset and performance psychology were just as valuable as the technical work. There was a genuine focus on how to think, prepare, and perform at a higher level—not just what to play. This had a noticeable impact on my confidence and consistency.
I also really appreciated the guidance around career direction. It wasn’t generic advice—it was thoughtful, tailored, and grounded in real-world experience, which made it feel both practical and achievable.
Overall, this has been an incredibly valuable experience as an advanced student. It’s rare to find teaching that supports both technical excellence and artistic freedom while also addressing the bigger picture of a career in music.
I recently started online lessons with Marlane and am over the moon to have found her. She’s very clear in her explanations and makes online learning feel surprisingly easy and engaging. Even in the first few lessons she helped me identify things in my playing that I hadn’t noticed before, she gave me practical ways to improve straight away. Highly recommend especially for those who need the flexibility of learning online!
I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Marlane both as a professional musician and educator, and have seen firsthand the depth of her expertise and commitment to her students’ development.
What sets Marlane apart is her ability to balance technical precision with genuine musical expression. Her teaching goes far beyond simply learning notes—she equips students with the tools to think independently, practise effectively, and develop their own artistic voice. She has a clear, structured approach, while remaining deeply responsive to each student’s individual needs and goals.
One experience that stands out is observing how she guides students through complex repertoire. Rather than overwhelming them, she breaks concepts down in a way that builds confidence and clarity, while still holding a high standard. The result is not only rapid progress, but a strong sense of ownership and enjoyment in the student’s playing.
I would highly recommend Marlane to anyone seeking a thoughtful, highly skilled, and inspiring teacher. Her ability to nurture both the technical and artistic sides of musicianship makes her an exceptional mentor for students of all levels.I started lessons with Marlane as an adult learner and have found her to be an exceptional teacher. She explains things clearly, is incredibly patient, and tailors each lesson to where I’m at without ever making it feel overwhelming. What I appreciate most is how she focuses not just on playing, but on how to practise effectively, which has made a huge difference in my progress. I’ve gained a lot more confidence and genuinely look forward to each lesson. Highly recommend.
