About Avelia

- What kind of experience do you have?

As a performer I have worked in most genres, both live and in the studio. I have played in many West End shows; toured with Marti Webb, and Jane McDonald; played in various soul, funk, Latin, Soca, African, jazz, function bands. I ran my own band for a while, then a jazz duo. I have given classical recitals with my brother (a professional pianist). I co-wrote and co-performed a theatre show - "Ifs, Buts & Babies" - in the UK. Currently I perform solo gigs with backing tracks.

As a teacher, I work in schools, as well as maintaining a private practice. I teach many beginners, both children and adults, as well as working with more advanced players (Grade 8/diploma and beyond).

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes. I hold a current DBS certificate - a requirement for my school teaching.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London. I have since had occasional lessons with many trumpet "names" such as John Wallace, Bobby Shew, Arturo Sandoval. I have learned so much through various experiences since leaving college, all of which I am able to pass on to students whenever appropriate.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I am a member of the Musicians' Union and the International Trumpet Guild.

Hello! I am a professional trumpet player with many years' playing and teaching experience and enjoy helping students of all ages to learn more about playing their chosen instrument.

I have a wide range of students from complete beginners (both children and adults), through improvers at all levels, to advanced students (Grade 8, diploma level and beyond). I hold a current DBS certificate.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach all brass instruments - trumpet, cornet, French horn, trombone, tuba, tenor horn, baritone, euphonium. Trumpet is my specialism - I also play flugelhorn and piccolo trumpet.

I teach music theory up to Grade 5 ... and beyond if desired!

Occasionally I am asked to give extra tuition in aural tests to students learning other instruments, to help them in that aspect of a forthcoming exam. And I teach piano.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I hold a B.Mus (London), LRAM (Teacher) and ARCM (Performer)

- How much do you charge?

I charge £45 per hour, and pro rata. The majority of students have half-hour lessons (@ £22.50 per lesson) in the early days, increasing the time as they improve. Advanced students would normally have an hour-long lesson.

- Where do you teach?

I teach from my home studio, which is on the Buckinghamshire/ Bedfordshire border. The nearest town is Leighton Buzzard, but I am also not far from Aylesbury, Milton Keynes etc. I also teach online, if required.

- When are you available?

In general, the parents of my school-age students prefer to have a set time and day per week for lessons, whereas my adult students may prefer to arrange times and days to suit on a more ad-hoc basis to accommodate work commitments. I am available to teach during the day and evening Monday to Friday, and Saturday mornings, to suit students - please contact me to check availability.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach all ages (currently 7-89!), and all levels from beginner to diploma and beyond.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I generally work with the ABRSM exams (Grades 1-8). Some students like to work towards the ABRSM Jazz exams either as well, or instead of, the regular exams.

If students have a preference for the Trinity exams, I am very happy to oblige.

At diploma level, it depends entirely on the student's requirements, which we discuss together in-depth.

Not all students wish to take exams, in which case I work with them to improve their playing constantly but without actual exam pressure. Should the need subsequently arise, I would write a letter of endorsement to confirm the student's playing level.

I teach many students to pass Grade 5 theory, and a few choose to go on to the higher grades.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

I love working with students who are keen and interested to learn their instrument, and are therefore enthusiastic and try hard.

A good technique is essential to enable any player to express their musicality through their playing. Whenever a student is struggling with a particular facet of playing we work together to overcome the problem - that's my job! … and we generally have fun in the process.

The more time a student is willing and able to put into their study, the better results they will achieve. Every student should aim to play their instrument every day - in the early stages of learning, 10-15 minutes a day is all that is necessary. At advanced levels, 2-3 hours a day would be required. Lessons and practice sessions will consist of a warm-up, some technical exercises, and learning pieces. The exact content will vary depending on level, whether or not working for an exam etc., etc.

Working for an exam will normally require a term or two of dedicated study with specific material (3 pieces, scales etc.). The following term will always be a complete contrast - new pieces every 2 or 3 weeks, less emphasis on scales, some work on increasing elements of technique and/or range, more fun! The term after an exam is essential, and often results in a significant increase in playing ability, which will lead towards the next exam.

Music is all about enjoyment and communication. In order to achieve this, regular practice is necessary to master the technical aspects of playing. As control over the instrument increases, so does the ability to make music.

Many students enjoy playing in bands or orchestras locally - meeting regularly for rehearsals can help one's playing, as well becoming a weekly social event.
