About Caitlin

Hello, my name is Caitlin! I work in the music industry as a songwriter and artist and I also work as a part-time university lecturer of songwriting.

I began writing songs at the age of 11 and performing them around venues in
my home town, Brighton, I then studied songwriting at Leeds Conservatoire and from there began my career as a professional songwriter and artist. I work with producers, artists and songwriters and I absolutely love the depth of fulfilment and self-development that you gain through collaboration.

I have extensive experience in collaborative songwriting as it is what I spend the majority of my time doing and I want to offer my services as a songwriting mentor to people of all ages and abilities! I have taught songwriting to children from the age of 5 as well as to adults at university-level and I am passionate about sharing the joy of songwriting with others as it can be such a rewarding and even therapeutic activity!

I was introduced to songwriting at 11 years old by a music teacher who noticed that I was writing poems and lyrics but had no music to accompany them. My piano and singing lessons (that I used to dread because of the formality and repetitive nature of them), turned into fully fledged songwriting sessions where we would just write together, and that ignited my passion!

About the lesson

My aim is to provide you with experience to enhance creative confidence and different skills to form a songwriting toolkit that you can use both in individual and collaborative practice. I am very flexible and will be working with a student-led methodology in order to provide bespoke lessons tailored exactly to your needs.

I prefer to take on the role of mentor as opposed to the formal "music teacher" role and endeavour to provide an atmosphere of collaboration and fun!

I am able to work with people of all ages; I have taught songwriting to children as young as five years old and adults at degree-level.

Successful songwriting requires a level of openness and lack of self-consciousness so I endeavour to create a comfortable and non-hierarchical atmosphere where possible. I like to emulate an environment similar to that of an industry-standard collaborative writing session (which is much less scary than it sounds)!

I was employed as a university lecturer because of my professional experience and I teach both group modules and 1-1 lessons on the Songwriting degree using this methodology, which has proven to be very successful!

Some things you can expect to develop during sessions would be:
- Communication skills
- Your own unique songwriting process
- A sense of individual lyric-writing style
- A deeper level of understanding about song structures
- Confidence in your own creative ideas
- A greater awareness of melody
- Appreciation of 'concepts'

Other things I can offer include:
- Recording the songs that you write (I have a home studio, some of which is portable)
- Knowledge and advice on the music industry
