About Jennifer
Hi! I'm Jennifer. Despite coming from a family with no musical background, I picked up guitar in primary school, quickly fell in love with it, and now I'm a full time professional musician!
I studied music at Leeds College of Music (now Leeds Conservatoire), gaining a 1st class BA (Hons) degree, and then became a full time musician, singer, and songwriter. It's been an amazing career so far with highlights including performing at major UK festivals (e.g Camp Bestival) and touring Europe. Alongside that, I've been teaching online guitar and songwriting lessons for the past 3 years. I've loved sharing my knowledge and the joy of learning to play with students aged 6-60!
I'm passionate about learning for the joy of it rather than exams and therefore I don't offer exam curriculums but instead teach students the songs that they want to learn, mostly within the genres of pop, indie, rock, and jazz. These include songs by the likes of Ed Sheeran, Adele, Arctic Monkeys, and The Beatles.

Whether you're looking to write your own songs, learn your favourite tunes or combine the two, I want to help you do just that! At age 10 I first picked up the acoustic guitar and have not been able to put it down since. I remember learning from a tutor who focused on my desire to learn pop repertoire instead of following a formal exam curriculum and I aspire to do the same for those wanting to learn to play for themselves rather than for exams.
Structure of lessons:
For our first lesson I would chat about your aims and assess what level you are at, beginning with a song/exercise that can help you get started based on our conversation. I also want to find out exactly what you aspire to achieve/learn through our lessons to cater them accordingly.
For the lessons following we will start with a quick recap of the previous week to see how you have got on with learning the song we covered, look at a new song and also allow some time for improvisation to develop ability in this area (e.g. playing around with the blues scale over a 12 bar blues sequence).
For those also looking to incorporate songwriting elements we can split the lessons into two halves and spend at least half of each session working on developing this area. Through exercises such as challenges to incorporate and rhyme words, melody over chords with a given set of lyrics, lyric writing for a set of chords and creating basic and complex chord sequences.
My experience as a self employed singer-songwriter (performed at UK festivals such as Camp Bestival, toured Europe in 2022 etc) alongside my formal training undertaking a Bachelor's degree at Leeds College of Music have provided the skillset I require to effectively cater for your needs and share my knowledge.
