About Jonathan
Experienced professional saxophonist, pianist and composer (BA Music Performance and MA Music Composition): I have performed with jazz stars such as Soweto Kinch, Rocky Winslow (California), supported Grammy award winning artist David Murray and also recorded an album of original jazz compositions quartet, Arcades of London. I have also recorded saxophone and keyboards on many pop/hip-hop tracks, composing hooks and counter melodies during the session.
I am very patient and love to help people advance with their instrument and improve their musical understanding. I offer tuition to all levels, topics that I cover are: grades (Trinity/Associated Board), jazz/pop improvisation, technique, learning songs by ear or with music, developing your style and sound. I teach out of a great space in Balham or I can travel to you (rail/bus cost added to hourly rate).
I have composed the score for two award winning films and I have a deep understanding of structure and harmony to draw on when trying to pass on my knowledge of music composition. I specialize in film music, classical piano music and jazz influenced pieces.

Lessons will be one hour, usually in three sections; practicing what we have already learned, moving ahead with new material and then having fun at the end to make sure that the lessons are enjoyable as well as informative.
I have a wide range of teaching materials, including a fingering chart, beginner books and more advanced music for when the student starts to progress. I will either play the piano along with the student or use a CD accompaniment so that the student can play while they learn. I try to make the learning experience as fun as possible and accomplish the goals we set together.
Apart from playing the saxophone in order to develop tone and technical ability, the lessons can include singing, listening to music, rhythmic and breathing exercises, harmonic tuition and basic theory.
I am patient and gentle with students with an emphasis on making the learning experience enjoyable so that the student will want to continue to play in the future. I try above all else to inspire a passion for music in my students and a desire to progress on the saxophone.

Perfect! Jonathan has been teaching me for a month and has been excellent. We have discussed what I wish to achieve in our lessons and he has tailored them towards musicality and improv in response. As a result my tone and musical ear are developing rapidly.
Jonathan is friendly and very supportive, as well as extremely knowledgeable in musical theory. He plays accompaniment as we learn which results in great development of musicality and results in some good-sounding improv!Perfect! Jonathan is a great teacher, passionate about the saxophone and imparting the right repertoire to hear sound across all of the musical scales. He is skilful at playing the sax and creating keyboard accompaniment. He has knowledge of music theory and uses notions of the mechanical design of instruments to complement his ideas. Whether you pursue examinations or playing for fun, Jonathan would be able to guide you.
