About James
I have been a music teacher for more than 20 years in my local area, teaching everyone from primary school age children who are just beginning their musical journey, to advanced mature students who are returning to the piano after years away. Whatever the age, ability level or interests of my students, it is always an immensely rewarding and satisfying experience to help them achieve their potential and discover a love of music and a passion for playing the piano. My teaching is rooted in practical, lived experience as a pianist, and I am still active as a performer and piano accompanist alongside my work as a tutor. I have performed at numerous venues around the UK and in various circumstances, from accompanying grade 1 exams in the local ABRSM music centre to performing alongside award-winning youth choirs in the Birmingham Symphony Hall. I know first-hand what is required to perform professionally at a high level and incorporate this knowledge into my lessons to ensure that, whatever the goals of my student, they can be confident of achieving them.

Piano lessons are offered to all ages and abilities at a rate of £35/hr. I have over 20 years' experience teaching the piano in a variety of educational settings and tailor my lessons to suit the interests of the individual, with opportunities to learn classical, pop and/or jazz piano. Across all repertoire there is an emphasis on the development of a sound technique and a thorough understanding of musical notation. Many of my pupils sit ABRSM exams (with a pass rate of almost 100%, 67% of all students sitting exams being awarded either distinction or merit) including passes with distinction at every grade, from 1-8. Students have been the recipients of prizes from the ABRSM, as well as considerable success in auditions and local music festivals. Tuition can also be offered in ABRSM music theory, musicianship and aural training.
