About Michael
Hello there! My name is Michael, and I am a professional and active flamenco guitarist from London. When I was 20, I moved to Seville, in the South of Spain, to study at the world-class flamenco school (Fundación Cristina Heeren). I stayed there as a scholarship student and teaching assistant for four years, where I learned (and continue to learn) from grand maestros such as Pedro Sierra, Antonio Moya, Paco Cortés, Juan Capallo, Rycardo Moreno, Salvador Gutiérrez, Patricia Lozano and Juana Amaya. I have recently completed an MA in Music from SOAS, University of London. I have experience performing both in Spain and the UK, with my musical work ranging from traditional flamenco performances (with a singer and dancer) to fusion projects in various other music genres. These include Turkish makam, traditional Greek and Latin music. If curiosity and excitement about flamenco have prompted you to search for teachers, you're in the right place. I am a very flexible and passionate teacher who prioritises finding your individual way of learning. Although transcriptions of material are possible, I prefer to use traditional methods of oral transmission as much as possible - it's a beautiful and all-encompassing way to learn music. We have to train our eyes and ears if we want to play flamenco guitar! I offer a concession price of £40 per hour for students and those on a low income. Lessons last one hour, where we will typically look at the various techniques, rhythms, harmonic concepts and repertoire necessary to navigate the flamenco palos (such as alegrías, tangos, bulerías and soleá). Students are free to choose whether they wish to learn flamenco guitar as a solo instrument, or traditionally as an instrument that accompanies voice (and dance). In my time working as a teaching assistant, I didn't just develop a deep love of this art, but also towards passing it on to people. I genuinely enjoy teaching and am always available for conversations about flamenco music. I would love nothing more than to pass on all I know. It is incredible and powerful...
