About Rhys
Why choose me as your tutor? I am deeply passionate about helping students identify and overcome their own unique, personal music production challenges (having had to work through my own at the start of my career). YouTube tutorials can only get you so far (and are often far too specific to be actually useful).
I am very friendly and love to work with people. Nothing makes me happier than helping a student to overcome a production hurdle they have struggled to crack by themselves. Feedback I have received from my previous cohorts of students often mentioned how I helped them with problems they didn’t even know they had until our sessions, and they were game changers for the quality of their music.

I am a highly experienced and knowledgeable professional electronic music producer, production tutor label owner and DJ. With over 10 years experience, I can offer unique insights into the business side of music production for an independent producer.
>>What can you expect in the lessons?
I offer a full length course, broken down into chapters, which covers all the essential areas I believe someone must be competent in (or at least be aware of) to produce professional quality, release-ready electronic music. It is totally up to the student which parts of the course they want to focus on (if any) and I am happy to work on other areas completely outside the course on the student's request. The course consists of the following chapters:
1. Production equipment
2. Preparation and organisation (templates, sample/plugin sourcing and organisation)
3. Track creation (Idea generation, drum programming, synthesis, track structuring, remixing/bootlegging, vocal sampling, overcoming getting stuck)
4. Track polishing (mixdowns, mastering)
5. Music business (growing your fan base, approaches to releasing music independently or via labels).
Common challenges I often help students overcome include:
- Overcoming the “8 bar loop” issue of not being able to expand a decent loop into a full length, release ready track
- Structuring a dance track properly (intros, drops, breakdowns, outros, phrasing, transitions, variations in patterns)
- Finding and choosing the right samples and plugins to make a track sound professional rather than flat and amateurish,
- Difficulties in making drums etc. sound punchy, full and professional
- Mixing and mastering, and achieving loud, strong mixes which translate well onto professional speaker rigs
- Producing fast enough to be able to fit meaningful production sessions into busy lives without much time
- Properly finishing projects and overcoming the tendency to move on to new projects constantly before finishing the last (with the result being nothing ever gets finished)
- The creative process and how to keep moving when you hit a sticking point while producing a track
Once the course / learning lessons are complete, I like to do consolidation sessions to make sure that the student knows how to implement the things they have learnt in the lessons in their own productions. I give the student some time to try out what they have learnt on their own productions. Then we have some further sessions to go over their productions in detail in real time, where I provide insights into how they can improve them and implement the lessons learnings better to achieve professional results.
I often also continue to do these detailed track feedback sessions with students for a long time after they finish the initial lessons as they find them so useful.
In the highly personalised lessons, I help students deeply understand their own production processes and help them identify their own unique personal challenges, roadblocks and gaps in their knowledge which they need to develop to take their productions to the next level. I then suggest ways they can improve in these areas, and give them the detailed tools, techniques and knowledge they require to do so, based on examples from my professional experience including many industry insider tips and tricks along the way.
