About Julia
I am a former professional ballet dancer with the Philadelphia Ballet, formerly Pennsylvania Ballet. I danced in the corps de ballet for 6 years and was an apprentice at Charlotte Ballet for a year. In my time as a professional, I performed Big Swans and Pas de Trois from Swan Lake, Queen of the Dryads and Mercedes from Don Quixote, and various other roles in a number of classical ballets. I have also had the privilege to dance In the Middle Somewhat Elevated by William Forsythe, the principal in Balanchine's Faust, and the Man I Love Pas/ Fascinatin' Rhythm from Balanchine's Who Cares. I trained at the HARID Conservatory which is a Vaganova based school in the USA, but I also spent time working with Balanchine teachers such as Patricia McBride, and Cuban style teachers such as Magaly Suarez. I have also experienced some difficult injuries in my career and have extensive knowledge on rehabbing injuries as well as conditioning to prevent them.

I was taught to teach fundamentals and foundations first before you can move onto a more complicated step. It is important to understand what muscles you should be using as well as what a step should technically look like. I was trained in Vaganova, so I place a big emphasis on heads and port de bras, but I also trained in the Cuban style, so I have many pointers for turning. I set up class similar to any other but I like to set up a barre that will aid with the foundation of a step in the center. For example, if we are focusing on attitude turns, I would do a balance in attitude at the barre, as well as a promenade in attitude in an adagio in center, then add the actual turn later in class. I also love to coach variations and have actual, professional experience performing a lot of them. Lastly, I can also help with any conditioning that may be necessary for a student. I'm experienced with both strength training and Pilates and firmly believe that both can help any dancer. The biggest thing that sets me apart from a lot of teachers is actually being a professional dancer. A lot of teachers never actually make it pro and can never give you that real-life experience. They may be able to teach the steps, but they have no idea what it is like to actually go out on stage and perform those steps at a professional level. I can work with just about any level of dancer. I love working with anyone who is eager to learn really.
