About Pro Surf

Our focus at Pro Surf Coaches is about helping you set goals for your surfing then create a plan to help you achieve them. This method has proven wildly successful for entry level as well as intermediate surfers.

ProSurf Coaches' founder Robbie Nelson is deeply passionate about surfing. His love of the sport and culture of surfing has taken him all over the planet. However his true love is sharing the experience with others and helping them achieve their goals with their surfing. To achieve this Coach Nelson graduated from the elite Surfing Australia Coaching Course and has been helping surfers take their performance to the next level for over 25 years.

Our amazing staff of coaches and instructors as well as our clients have helped build a community that is both educational and fun. We believe that everyone is both teacher and student, and from this our methods continually and exponentially grow and improve.

The best part of the job is seeing the face of a client who has achieved one or all of their goals. It's satisfying to have been a part of that process.

After successfully teaching several of my friends when I was younger I decided to educate myself on how to become a more effective surf instructor. This lead to a career of working with elite surfers and this is where my love for the job really blossomed.

I have as much fun teaching surfing as I do surfing for myself so it stuck and 30+ years and 15,000 clients later I am still going strong.

Lead coach Robbie Nelson has multiple certifications, including the Surfing Australia level 6 coaching certification, the M.A.P. advanced coaching certification as well as first aid and first responder certifications.

In the past 30+ years of coaching, he has worked with over 15,000 surfers of all abilities.

All of our sessions, lessons and clinics are designed for the individual so we like to get to know a client before their first session with us. So the first step is to set up a phone conversation. This interview is essential for any level of surfer because it gives our client a chance to discuss their surfing skill sets and ocean experience, what surfboards they are riding and what their goals are. We then help them pick a plan that works for their goals and budget.

We then send them a Client Questionnaire. This five minute questionnaire helps the new client inventory their skills, their fitness, their diet and their goals.

These notes from both the phone interview and questionnaire help our coaches understand the client and fine tune their individual Coaching Plan.

We then add them to the roster and subscribe them to our newsletter and Surf Alert, which allows them to stay on top of their local surf conditions and notifies them when to call and schedule their sessions.

In three decades of surf coaching I have worked with every type of student, from very young children to older adults (my oldest client on my roster is 71). I've also worked with celebrities, dentists, lawyers, doctors and even an army colonel. I've also worked with bot men and women.

Having a broad base of clients has helped me expand my range as a teacher.

Surfing requires a lifestyle change and there are two things that I tell all of our clients:

Be realistic. Be in shape or be willing to get into shape.

Surfing doesn't care about your schedule. The waves come when they come so be prepared to change your plans and this includes taking the occasional day off of work.

This is the only way you are going to takie your surfing to the next level.

There are way too many good experiences to list here

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
The first question you need to ask yourself is "Am I ready to make a lifestyle change to do this?"

Any surfer (or anyone looking to start surfing) needs to look at their fitness first. Getting fit to surf and maintaining a high level of fitness is essential to ensure rapid progress and avoid injury.

Surfing isn't a "hobby" and if you are looking to go surfing at noon on a weekend or if you are expecting to not put in the work with your fitness, then maybe surfing isn't for you.

Our pricing is based on your what your goals are. We structure our rates to be competitive yet we also believe in providing value for your dollar.

So instead of billing hourly, we change per session or per package. For example: three 2.5 hour sessions is $450. Broken down hourly, that's roughly $60 per hour.

Plus we do more than what happens in the water. We provide free clinics, accurate surf reports and surf alerts and we also have a surfboard shaper, a chiropractor and a personal trainer on staff.
