About Jason
I am a former college major in classical piano, a former director of a school of music, musical director & musician coach for a 10,000-member multisite church, & currently tour, perform, & record with national & local artists, while also teaching part-time at the state’s largest university’s school of the arts.

I’ve playing music almost my entire life, & have been convincing people to pay me to do it since I was 15!
My belief is that the best instructors spark curiosity & teach students how to teach themselves. I learned to how to make records by trial &error, driven by my own desire to learn. It was only after I felt I'd hit a ceiling with my ability that I started reading books & taking courses to learn the science behind audio to better understand the entire process. What I teach in my lessons is everything I wish someone had showed me when I starting, knowledge that would have saved me a lot of time figuring it out for myself. Not to rob you of the essential experience of learning by doing, but to make your journey as fruitful as it possibly can be!
Everything I teach is completely tailored to the student‘s taste, skills, & goals. I want to help them become the creator they want to be. We start with the basics, making sure we have a solid foundational method to build upon, but from there, we can go any direction you want. I can teach concepts very abstractly, or break it down simple layman’s terms, or we can jump straight practical solutions to every problem you face & work backwards from there.
Whatever the approach, I filter my teaching method through one question: is it useful? My lessons are built on a foundation of my over two decades of being a musician in the real world, one who continually gets hired.
I don’t strive just to show you how to make better recordings, but how to be a more complete music-maker, better at expressing your unique creative voice.

Jason is an incredible guitar and songwriting teacher! He deeply understands and explains music theory and how fundamental it is to lessons.
I met jason during a summer session at UNCSA where i took lessons from him. Was supposed to be a temporary thing but once I got back home I decided that I wanted him as a permanent guitar teacher. I would recommend Jason because he’s very patient and willing to teach me anything I want to learn. Also a very talented teacher. He’s able to explain anything I ask and more and makes me want to learn more about the complex little bits of guitar. Jason is a great teacher and I hope to be just as good as him one day!
