About Helen

With more than 20 years experience and 6000+ hours of teaching in a university environment I have always been passionate about supporting and guiding students throughout their study. I believe that everyone has the capacity to develop strong academic skills that benefit you at university and beyond!

My own academic background is in health and includes a degree in Applied Biology, a Postgraduate Diploma in Dietetics (I am also a state registered dietitian), an MSc in Health Research, and a PhD in Clinical Nutrition. As a certified lecturer in higher education and qualified teacher of English as a second language (TEFL), my qualifications and professional experiences enable me to support learners from a wide range of background and at every University level - particularly in the field of health and health science.

I have extensive teaching experience, having delivered more than 80 teaching modules in areas such as nutrition, research methods, dissertation and academic and professional skills. One of the most rewarding parts of my work has been mentoring students, especially supporting them in converting their dissertation project and PhD theses into publications in high-impact journals. Grateful to have built a strong research profile myself, I have over 30 published papers and more than 50 presentations/published abstracts at international conferences, which continues to help shape my teaching.

Most importantly, I have always enjoyed seeing students progress and succeed!

I offer friendly, personalised lessons (usually on MS Teams) designed to help you feel confident and supported in your academic journey. My sessions are interactive and can include quizzes, online tools, whiteboard activities, and step-by-step guidance, so that learning feels engaging rather than overwhelming.

The focus of each lesson is based on what you need and can include building skills such as critical thinking, analysing and evaluating evidence, using academic databases, referencing, developing research ideas and methods. It may also involve improving presentation skills or dissertation and thesis support and proof reading

Lessons are usually one hour long and are suitable for university students at any level, whether you are studying for a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD. I have worked with hundreds of UK and international students and have successfully supervised over 150 successful dissertations and 5 PhD theses. It has given me a strong understanding of the challenges and pressures of academic study and the requirements at each level

Most importantly, my goal is to create a supportive learning environment where you feel comfortable asking questions, developing confidence, and making steady progress.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

From the beginning of my career, I've had a strong passion for academic writing and health research. Initially, I focused on nutritional research, but over time, this has expanded to include a wider range of health sciences! At first, I didn't realize the gaps in my understanding, but I was lucky to have encouraging clinical colleagues who helped and motivated me to write and publish. It felt like a seamless transition to start teaching nutrition and research at the University, and rewarding to share some of the insights I received. Moving into tutoring seemed like a natural progression!
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I support a wide array of academic skills that improve structure and boost confidence in writing assignments, including essays, dissertations, and theses. This encompasses the level of analysis and critical writing necessary for undergraduate, Master's, and PhD studies, as well as guidance on structuring, linking, and integrating evidence and references and ensuring you have met assessment criteria

Additionally, I cover database searching, retrieving references, and presentation skills (such as slide organization) for showcasing research projects, academic posters, and conference abstracts.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I've had fantastic role models in my career, two especially! They each taught me different skills - firstly how to write and publish, secondly how to teach in an interesting and inclusive way. They motivated me to progress and I wouldn't be tutoring today without their help and support. I will always be grateful!
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Great communication, patience, listening skills, knowledge, experience ... and humour!
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I came into teaching after working clinically in the NHS and studied all the way through. It was hard, working at evenings, weekends and occasionally not always fully understanding the brief! For one particularly difficult MSc assignment my only feedback was 'Not written in a style conducive to healthcare economics'. I didn't really understand what the style should actually be. I've always remembered that comment and that when having so many strands to our lives nowadays, access to good teaching and the confidence to know you're on the 'right tracks' is everything!
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

The challenges and obstacles I've encountered have often revolved around juggling my family life and personal commitments with my work and studies. No matter how much you strive for a 'balance', it rarely turns out as expected. Achieving that balance has been crucial, as it helps to know how to seek assistance, collaborate effectively, implement simple time-saving strategies, and access the amazing research and writing resources that are now out there – but weren't always available!
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My own passion has always revolved around teaching itself. To see students learn effectively, regardless of their previous knowledge and background, progress through courses, learn new skills, publish their work, transition into incredible job roles - is a fantastic testimony to them. Supporting along the way gives real satisfaction!
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

Three key elements! Fostering solid relationships where students can feel confident to communicate, explaining the subject in a way that suits them and teaching with patience, adaptability and a touch of humour!
