About Sivaja

Teaching has been my passion since I was in school. I started doing voluntary tuition classes whilst I was doing my A levels more than 10 years ago and have progressed steadily since then. I primarily tutor Maths and English at KS1/2 level, and specialise in preparing my students for their 11+ entrance examinations.

I have a BSc Psychology (1st Class, Honours) degree from UCL and was awarded a MSc in Applied Forensic Psychology with Distinction from the University of York. I currently work full time as an Assertive Outreach Tutor (AOT) for a service which provides day education for pupils in KS 2/3/4 and 5 with behavioural, emotional and social difficulties (SEMH) and also pupils with autistic spectrum conditions (ASC). I teach core curriculum subjects for KS2-5.

Over the years, I have worked with various young people with wide-ranging, special educational needs. I have become more confident and resilient after working with children who have complex individual and family histories and have developed a greater awareness of safeguarding and child protection issues. In my current role, I conduct regular risk assessments, make daily observations of my students' presentation and liaise with the team around the child in order to offer the best possible support for them.

About the lesson

I work hard to understand pupils’ interests, strengths, and abilities so that I can form a strong, functional relationship with them. I am kind and friendly, as I like my students to feel comfortable enough to ask me questions and approach me if they feel hesitant or are struggling with a particular topic or concept. However, having worked with numerous students that exhibit challenging behaviours, I ensure that I am assertive when need be and correct any inappropriate use of language or behaviour.

I like to teach each child on an individual basis, by observing their learning style and determining what would be most beneficial for them. In some cases, I create fun and engaging lesson plans and include regular breaks; in other instances, I may encourage students to try and complete more challenging work and fewer breaks. Whatever teaching method I use, I always aim to maximise my students’ potential by channelling their strengths, whilst also identifying room for improvement. I also focus on praising and rewarding good behaviour and academic progress. When it is appropriate, I make my students feel as though they are a part of a team, and try and involve them as much as possible in decisions I make.

What separates me from other tutors is the combination of my passionate and driven personality with my enhanced relevant skill-set, postgraduate level knowledge, and years of experience working with young people and tutoring. Most importantly, I am motivated to make a difference to young peoples’ lives and am therefore committed to producing the best possible work in this role. I consider their progress to be my progress and their achievements to be my achievements!
