About Jacob

I’m an experienced tutor with a background in social sciences and humanities, as well as political engagement and activism. I specialize in making complex ideas accessible, engaging, and useful. I’ve spent years helping students not only understand the material but actually think with it—whether they’re preparing for exams, writing essays, or just trying to make sense of the content. My teaching approach is grounded in research-backed strategies and modeled to different learning styles. I’m especially passionate about helping students who’ve felt overlooked, underestimated, or disconnected from traditional education. My goal is always to build clarity, confidence, and critical thinking—without wasting time on busywork or fluff. I treat students like the capable thinkers they are, and take pride in helping them reach their potential.

I teach the social sciences like they actually matter—because they do. My lessons are grounded in real-world relevance and critical thinking, not just memorizing dates or definitions. I help students make connections between concepts and the real world.

I build my lessons around active engagement and discussion favoring an inquiry-based instruction method. I favor the 5E learning model (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate) to scaffold understanding and promote natural inquiry. I try to lecture as little as possible. Instead I try to guide students through structured discussion using applied scenarios and thought experiments that challenge assumptions and build critical analysis skills. I use scaffolding and various retrieval strategies to improve retention over time.

With new students I start by clarifying their needs and objectives to set learning goals to guide our lessons. We explore content interactively pulling from assignments, class notes, and outside sources to guide the student toward full understanding of topics. We analyze and apply those ideas through discussion or short written responses, and we end with a quick debrief to check understanding and set the stage for next time. There’s structure, but room to follow the curiosity when it strikes.

I’m not here to make you memorize endless pieces of information—I’m here to help you integrate them into your life so they are relevant and naturally become part of your knowledge base. I combine my background in social sciences and humanities with instructional design strategies that have research backed results. I specialize in helping students who are burned out, bored, or convinced they “just don’t get it.” I ask questions, model critical thinking, and create a space where students feel supported.
