About Craig
I've taught privately and in schools for over five years, to students of widely varying age and ability.
I studied jazz piano at Monash University, and classical piano privately.
I have played in a variety of jazz groups, as well as folk, blues, and rock bands.
I play primarily piano, but also offer lessons in guitar and drums. I see musical expression as more of an attitude than a collection of mechanics, and love to share my passion with others. One of my greatest joys is seeing my students create and discover their own expressive world.

I believe in a thorough understanding of the instrument and also of the music being played. Music is a language, a means of expression and communication, so I teach my students to appreciate the connection between the sound and the feeling.
I have taught students of a wide age range, and am flexible and adaptable to each student's unique learning style and needs. Most lessons are 30 minutes, although some students fare better with 60. It is dependent on their level and requirement.
My lessons involve a balance between learning repertoire and technical skills to support it. Especially with younger students, I teach a range of genres to build an appreciation of the wider scope of music.
A grounding in reading and theory is also important, and I believe strongly in developing aural skills in conjunction with technique.
Improvisation and creative exploration are key components of my approach, backed up by an understanding of context and convention. I often tell my students that one must learn the rules in order to break them better, and it is their responsibility as an artist to do so, for the sake of the progression of our art.
