About Brett
I have a Masters in Philosophy from the University of California, Irvine and am studying for the PhD. I have been trained primarily by moral, legal and political philosophers but also by theoretical linguists, philosophers of language and logicians. In addition, I have spent a lot of time in the Classics department studying Latin. I have spent a great deal of time over the past few years reading Augustine of Hippo, Anselm, Abelard, Aquinas, and Spinoza, among other philosophers who wrote in Latin.

We will focus on composing whole sentences aloud and going over syntax and semantics.
What makes my lessons somewhat unique is that I will teach students a symbolic system so that they will be able to represent the syntactic information of the sentences to themselves explicitly, much like someone with know-how of natural language syntax might.
Learning this symbolic system will empower students to derive the meaning of any Latin sentence and enable them to identify any ambiguity which is left open to interpretation given the structure of the syntax.
It will also simply introduce them to the intellectual wonders of the laws of natural language syntax and semantics, thereby making everyday reading material all the more interesting as they go on in life.
In short, students will become stronger Latinists and will start to get an explicit grasp on the structure of universal grammar.
