About David
In my near-30 years of teaching I’ve helped students from a wide variety of backgrounds – undergraduates from Oxford and Stanford Universities, as well as from the Russell Group Universities of Manchester and Southampton. I’ve taught children taking the 11+, and worked with GCSE and A-Level candidates, as well as with students taking English-language exams such as IELTS, and those preparing for university study (critical thinking and reading, and academic writing). For several years I’ve also trained teachers and have worked as an editor to professional academics.
I’ve always had excellent feedback from students, who’ve appreciated the care I go to in order to find out about their needs, and then help them towards their goals.
My methods and prompt feedback produces results: my student from the University of Stanford was producing work of a C-grade standard when she started the course, but after 8 weeks of tuition with me she achieved an A grade as her final result. Likewise, French students studying for their equivalent of Oxbridge (the grandes écoles system) often found their school grades increasing from 4/20 to 12/20 after just one week of intensive classes with me.

I’ve been teaching for nearly 30 years. I have a PhD in English Literature, so this is my main area of expertise, but I’ve also published articles on the History of Art, and have taught History and Politics for more than a decade.
My method is always the same: first, I do thorough research into my students’ assessment criteria, using the skills honed on my PhD, and then design a course which will guide the student from his or her current level to the level required by their examiners using step-by-step exercises.
In this I’m aided by my experience, over 20 years, of writing classroom material for students and teachers, where breaking down exercises into manageable tasks and modelling good practice is an essential part of the job.
Past students have particularly appreciated the models that I create for them (of essays, for example, or other tasks), with which I demonstrate best practice and give them something clear to aim for. I use Google Docs so that I can observe my students live as they write, and the insight that gives me into their problems has been immensely useful in helping me to improve their work.

David is an excellent teacher. He is very knowlegeable and explains things in ways that make them stick. He is dedicated to ensuring his students always achieve their best. A hearty recommendation from a long-time colleague.
Dr Addyman is an excellent tutor and mentor whom I've had the pleasure to work with both as a student and as a colleague.
During my PhD studies, he helped me to edit and prepare a paper for publication; his criticism was always constructive and highly insightful. As a colleague, I've witnessed him approach lessons with a great deal of ingenuity, inventiveness and care, tailoring lessons to the individual needs of each student.
I'd definitely recommend David to anyone wishing to take their studies to the next level!J'ai rencontré David lorsque je recherchais un professeur pour m'aider à préparer l'épreuve d'anglais du concours ECG.
I highly recommend David as an exceptional English teacher. His calm and strategic approach made preparing for the IELTS both effective and enjoyable. He deeply understands the needs of his students, tailoring lessons to address individual strengths and weaknesses. Thanks to his expertise and support, I felt confident and well-prepared for the exam.
