As a former university lecturer I am able to work with many different learning methodologies and learning styles. My post-doctoral research is in communication, media, and journalism; and a Masters degree in Australian studies which covers politics, economics, literature, history, sociology, and psychology. I also have qualifications in visual arts.
I teach using the Socratic method, so there is no teacher-student transmission, we explore the subject area together through guided reading and writing exercises. I provide critique and feedback on written work and help you to master deep learning techniques that will be valuable for a lifetime.
I am widely read and an active researcher; this means I can work in most social science, arts, philosophy, and liberal studies disciplines.

Dr Marty possesses a peerless approach to pedagogy and an unparalleled understanding of the intricacies of social and political science, history and geography. Adopting a methodical and caring approach, he works hard to impart his passion for these subjects onto his students. Some topics we explored in our classes included 19th century colonialism, sustainable development, and disaster capitalism. Marty helped pinpoint weaknesses in my writing that I had never even recognised. In doing so, he guided me to write with the flair and depth required to maintain high distinction grades for university. I even received 96% for a mid-term paper! Indubitably, Marty was instrumental in helping me gain admission into Australia's top law school. Given his PhD and decades working in journalism, his hourly rate is more than fair. Harry Potter had Albus Dumbledore, Matilda had Miss Honey, I have Dr Marty Hirst. I am so grateful to work with Marty - he is a teacher of genius who I truly look up to!
Martin is a highly knowledgeable and adaptable tutor. He has helped me immensely in improving my writing, providing me with tips and writing strategies that I utilise to this day. While he won't tell you directly what to do or how to think, this in the long truly benefits this student. Martin facilitates independent thought while providing the necessary nudge or editorial advice when needed. I highly recommend Martin for any student of philosophy, political science, or sociology, or those who want assistance with essay writing and formatting.
Marty is a patient and highly knowledgeable tutor. Throughout the Honours year of my degree, Marty provided invaluable support and advice for my research project. I was able to stick to timeframes and achieve a mark that I was more than happy with thanks to Marty’s help. HIGHLY recommend and will absolutely get in touch with Marty for my Masters in the future!
Martin Hirst was one of my lecturers at Edith Cowan University. He is passionate about journalism and about producing good journalists and this makes him a highly engaging teacher. Martin made me more confident in my abilities as a thinker and writer - I will always owe him for the time and effort he put into helping to form me as a journalist.
