About Nathan

My goal for a long time was to be a professor with a research lab. Over my career, I found that what I wanted was not so much the lab, but to be a solid support for my students. First and foremost, the most important thing to me about that role as the head of a lab is comfort. If a student can't express themself, if they dread coming to class (or the lab), if they are made to feel less than, they won't learn. I try to contextualize all the material I teach so that it makes sense for each of my students. In that vein, being an ally to any and all marginalized communities (eg BIPOC, LGBTIA+, non-native English speakers, and differently-abled students among others) is a vital part of my mission as a teacher. I have taught students from every socio-economic group and scientific background, from never having had science class to college undergrads and even masters students, and I've had several of them go on to publish their research. Finally, I try to make myself available for students that have questions outside of class time, or need letters of recommendation as I think it's important for students to feel support through each stage of their academic career.

I TA'd in grad school (Marine Biology and Limnology courses, the latter I taught in French!), and I've been teaching high school since 2018.

I taught for 3 years at the School for Science and Math at Vanderbilt where students learn about many fields within STEM, and ultimately performed advanced research projects in labs on Vanderbilt's campus.

I'm now a teacher at Greenwich Country Day School (2021-Present) where I teach Marine Sciences, Advanced Scientific Research, Advanced Biology, and Animal Behavior

My goal in teaching science is to show you that anyone can be a scientist. Along the way of teaching specific material, I try to impart larger lessons about science, like how to ask questions, how to approach those questions, and then how to convey what you learn to different audiences. I will happily teach you discrete facts, but I'm more interested in broad concepts as these allow us to branch among topics and disciplines. You can build a question in marine science that you can modify for terrestrial systems or even human society. Once you learn how to ask questions, the world of science unlocks for you.

My lessons are typically taught through slide decks, but everything I put on a slide can become a conversation. I can speed us up if we need to fit a deadline, but I want to make sure you understand the material before moving on. When I make assignments, I make them around the material we've covered in class, nothing out of a worksheet book/site. As much as possible, I want my teaching to be an experience that you remember rather than cramming facts into your brain for an exam.
