About Shemara

Having been a student myself at manifold levels of the educational spectrum—from my early elementary days, to my time in the Gifted program and high school, all the way to my university experiences as an undergraduate and graduate student at Oxford University—I appreciate, as well as anyone, the value of a dedicated, skilled, and flexible teacher in bringing out the best in a student. When effectively realized, academic progress is a positive cycle—as motivated learning and improving ability induce better grades, further building a student’s confidence and appreciation for achievement, thereby prompting them to continue aiming for success and developing their self-application. I look forward to being part of, and encouraging, such growth; and please feel free to reach out to discuss how I can best serve your needs.

I have extensive academic experience, a valuable tutoring background with different age groups, and a passion for learning that I aim to translate into fruitful learning experiences for my students. Currently a PhD/DPhil candidate at the University of Oxford in English Language and Literature, I also have a Master’s degree in English Language & Literature from Queen’s University and an Honours Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto which included a holistic array of courses outside my main major (including a minor in History and courses in areas from politics, philosophy, and religion to science-related breadth courses). Thus, despite my academic focus on English, the broad written and analytical applicability of the core skills involved—as well as my broad academic experience—makes me well-suited to tutoring other essay-based and critical-analytical subjects within the humanities and social sciences as well, such as history, civics/politics, social studies etc…, and anything language or writing-related in general. I am also happy to help with general academic and language skills, such as reading & literacy, essay & report writing, improving English language skills, cover letter & resume preparation, and test preparation.

Further, having had the beneficial experience of tutoring for a variety of age groups, I also enjoy working with students of diverse ages and grade levels. Such past experience includes assisting in a library program for young readers, all the way to having served as a teaching assistant (TA) for early undergraduates in a university setting—also making me well-equipped to mentor high school students on the cusp of post-secondary studies, as well as university and college students, as I have a sound understanding of the skills and eventual expectations necessary for success at that level.
