About Amy

I’m a qualified Zoologist and experienced Animal Management lecturer with a strong background in both the animal care industry and education. My industry experience includes working as an Animal Care Technician within a specialist reptile facility, working with a wide range of reptiles and exotic species, as well as creating educational content for reptile and animal-care businesses. I also have experience within animal rescue and currently contribute as a trustee for a reptile and exotic animal rescue charity.

Alongside my industry experience, I have extensive teaching experience across a range of ages, abilities and qualification levels. I have taught practical and theory-based Animal Care and Land-based Studies, including learners aged 14–16 within alternative provision, as well as Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 learners and T Level students.

My teaching experience covers a broad range of topics including animal health and welfare, husbandry, nutrition, behaviour, handling, accommodation and enrichment, British wildlife, exotics and reptiles, practical animal-care skills, and the wider animal care industry.

I particularly enjoy practical teaching and helping learners connect the theory they learn in the classroom to real-life animal care situations. I have experience supporting learners with a wide range of additional needs and learning preferences, and I adapt my teaching, resources and pace to help each learner make progress.

About the lesson

My approach to teaching is centred around making learning inclusive, engaging and tailored to each individual learner. I recognise that everyone learns differently, so I adapt my teaching style, resources and pace to suit the person in front of me.

I take the time to understand a learner’s strengths, areas for development and preferred ways of learning. Some learners may benefit from visual resources, practical examples and activities, while others may need concepts broken down into smaller steps or more time to process information. I’m happy to slow the pace down when something needs more explanation, or move things along when a learner is ready for more of a challenge.

I aim to create a supportive, judgement-free environment where learners feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and building confidence. I also use a range of approaches to support different learning needs, including adapting instructions, providing accessible resources, using repetition and checking understanding throughout a session.

Ultimately, my goal is not just to help learners get the right answer, but to help them understand the subject, develop confidence and become more independent in their learning.
