About Blythe
I am a violin teacher with 3 years of experience and a Bachelor of Music in Early Music with a Baroque Violin Specialisation. I have taught over 120 students across all ages, from 5-year-olds beginning their musical journey to adult learners taking up the instrument for the first time in their forties. My early music background gives my teaching a historical dimension that most violin students find genuinely fascinating and that helps them understand why certain techniques exist. I won a junior prize in a regional violin competition during my studies and have performed professionally in period instrument ensembles, experience that directly informs how I coach students for performances and examinations. I am known for patience, clear communication, and an ability to explain the same technical concept in four or five different ways until one of them lands. I work with students at every level of ability with equal enthusiasm, and I never make a student feel that they started too late or that they lack natural talent.

My violin teaching is rooted in a deep belief that good posture and natural movement are the foundation of everything else, and I spend meaningful time in early lessons helping students understand how the body works with the instrument rather than against it. I use slow-motion video review in lessons so students can see their bow arm, left-hand frame, and overall stance from the outside for the first time — this is consistently revelatory and accelerates technical development significantly. My approach to intonation is based on active ear training running alongside scale practice, so students develop the listening skill to self-correct rather than depending on a teacher to tell them they are out of tune. I have a strong background in baroque violin and I use historically informed bowing techniques even with beginners because they produce a more natural tone and fewer technical problems in the long run. For students working towards examinations I map out a term-by-term preparation schedule at the start, so neither student nor parent is surprised by timelines. Ensemble awareness is built into lessons through the use of carefully chosen accompaniment recordings that require students to listen outward as well as focus inward. I give detailed written feedback after every lesson covering bow technique, intonation, rhythm, and musicality as four distinct strands so students always know exactly where they stand. Group performance workshops are offered termly for students who want experience playing alongside peers before formal examinations. Students who are struggling with motivation receive a complete repertoire reboot — we find music they genuinely love and use it as the technical vehicle. My teaching goal is a student who practises because they cannot wait to play, not because they feel obligated.
