About Rochelle

Teaching saxophone is a deeply rewarding practice where I help students develop both technical skill and a personal connection to music. I start by focusing on the physical fundamentals—breath support, embouchure technique, posture, and finger agility—that build a foundation for expressive playing. Developing a rich tone and precise articulation are key priorities, as these elements shape the emotional impact of every performance. Improvisation is central to my approach, introduced early through playful exercises that encourage students to explore their creativity and musical ideas freely. Music theory is taught in context, with students learning about scales, chords, and harmonic progressions through the repertoire and improvisation exercises that they find inspiring. I collaborate with students to select music that motivates them, spanning jazz standards, pop songs, classical works, and original compositions. Together, we set clear goals and create practice strategies that foster steady progress and sustained enthusiasm. One of the most inspiring teaching experiences was witnessing a student overcome technical challenges and stage nerves to deliver a confident, soulful solo at a jazz festival. My philosophy centers on nurturing saxophonists who are technically skilled, imaginative, and passionate musicians with a deep love for their instrument.

About the lesson

In my saxophone teaching practice, I emphasize that music is a personal journey that blends discipline, creativity, and emotional expression. I approach each student as a unique individual, tailoring lessons to fit their goals, interests, and learning style. The foundation of my teaching is built on solid technique—posture, breath control, embouchure, tone quality, finger dexterity, and articulation—because these are the essential skills for effective playing.

I incorporate music theory and aural skills in a practical way, ensuring that students understand the structure and language of music to deepen their musicality. I encourage students to explore a variety of genres including jazz, classical, blues, pop, and contemporary music, to keep lessons fresh and relevant. Improvisation and composition are integral components, fostering creativity and confidence in self-expression.

I also stress the importance of regular performance, whether through recitals, open mics, or informal gatherings, to develop stage presence and communication skills. Technology is a valuable tool in my teaching toolkit—using recording apps, metronomes, and tuners to support practice and self-evaluation. One particularly inspiring experience was guiding a student who was initially intimidated by jazz improvisation;

through patient guidance and structured exercises, they discovered their own voice and gained confidence in solo performance. My ultimate goal is to cultivate lifelong musicians who are not only skilled on the saxophone but also passionate about their art and empowered to share it with the world.
