About Isabel
I am a second-year medical student living in Hobart, who is passionate about languages and literature. After graduating college with an ATAR of 99.85 (majoring in English, Philosophy, Astrophysics and Chemistry), I took a gap year in 2019 to live in France and work as an au pair (tutoring children in English). Since then, UTAS has recruited me numerous times for different peer support opportunities to help first-year students with essay-writing and study tips, so I am well-qualified as a knowledgeable and enthusiastic tutor.

My teaching method is about nurturing a confident and engaged student, and their interest in whatever topic I am tutoring. I believe that students will only truly excel when they are listened to, and when their personal strengths and points for development are encouraged warmly and passionately. I therefore base my tutoring around a personalized approach, where I actively engage in what the student is interested in and needs support in. For writing support, this involves a balance of looking at work which my student has produced, as well as exemplar pieces from wider literature, and contrasting these in order to notice similarities and differences. We then look at how these variations can change the overall tone and strength of the writing. In terms of literary analysis, I strongly believe in discussion between student and mentor, so I work to guide the student as they develop opinions and ideas on the text. I then work with these, to help the student learn to confidently and faithfully articulate these ideas.
