About Ozz
Music has been the driving force of my life for over three decades. As a dedicated guitarist based right here in Calgary, I have had the incredible privilege of turning my passion for the guitar into a lifelong career, and I am thrilled to share that experience with you.
To give you a sense of my background, my 30-year musical journey has taken me everywhere from intimate acoustic duo performances in local cafes to massive concert stages, even performing alongside full symphony orchestras. I have spent countless hours in recording studios laying down tracks as a solo guitarist for various album projects, and I've built a diverse, stage-tested repertoire spanning rock, blues, pop, and reggae. This extensive, hands-on experience in both live performance and professional recording means I understand exactly what it takes to develop a great tone, solid rhythm, and the confidence to play in front of others.
As an educator, I pride myself on being patient, approachable, and deeply committed to my students' success. I know that picking up an instrument can feel intimidating at first, which is why I focus on creating a warm, supportive, and stress-free environment. I believe that learning the guitar should be a highly rewarding and fun experience, never a chore.
Whether I am playing on stage or helping a student nail their first classic rock solo, my core mission is always the same: to share the profound joy of making music. When you book a lesson with me, you are getting a professional who takes your musical goals seriously and will celebrate your progress every step of the way. Let's pick up the guitar and make some great music together!

My Approach as a Tutor: Sharing Real-World Musical Experience
Music is meant to be played, felt, and enjoyed. With over 30 years of experience performing live on stage and recording in studios, my approach to tutoring is deeply rooted in real-world application. I believe in bridging the gap between practicing in your bedroom and playing with confidence. I share my knowledge not just by explaining the notes, but by demonstrating the tone, phrasing, and emotion behind the music. My goal is to make the learning process as inspiring as the music itself, helping you build a strong foundation while keeping your passion alive.
Teaching Methodology and Techniques
My methodology is highly personalized and student-centric. Rather than relying solely on dry, repetitive technical drills, I integrate technique and theory directly into the music you love.
Repertoire-Based Learning: We focus on learning your favorite songs. By deconstructing tracks you already enjoy, we organically cover chord progressions, rhythm variations, and timing.
Solo Deconstruction: For those looking to master classic guitar solos, I use a step-by-step breakdown technique. We analyze the phrasing, bends, vibrato, and picking dynamics that give legendary solos their signature feel.
Practical Application: I emphasize how to practice efficiently at home so you see continuous improvement between our sessions.
A Typical Lesson Plan
While every lesson is tailored to the individual student's needs and current progress, a standard 45 to 60-minute session generally follows this structure:
Warm-Up & Review (10 mins): We start with light finger exercises to warm up and briefly review what you practiced during the week, addressing any hurdles.
Core Concept & Technique (15-20 mins): Introducing a new chord progression, strumming pattern, or lead technique.
Song Integration (15-20 mins): Applying the new concept directly to a song or solo we are working on. This is where the theory turns into actual music.
Wrap-Up & Goal Setting (5 mins): Summarizing the lesson, providing PDF notes or practice videos if needed, and setting clear, achievable practice goals for the upcoming week.
What Sets Me Apart
What makes my tutoring unique is the breadth of my practical experience. Having played the guitar for over three decades, I have performed in everything from intimate cafes to massive concerts, and even alongside symphony orchestras. I don't just teach you how to read tabs or play scales; I teach you how to sound like a musician. I understand the nuances of live performance, the intricacies of studio recording, and the secrets to achieving the perfect tone, and I bring all of that stage-tested expertise directly to your lessons.

Recommendations

For decades, I promised myself I would learn to play the acoustic guitar, but life, work, and family always seemed to get in the way. Now in my 60s, I decided it was finally time to do something just for me, and I am so incredibly glad I found Ozz! I was honestly very nervous and worried I was 'too old' to start from scratch, but his endless patience and warm personality put me at ease immediately. He never once made me feel silly for being an absolute beginner. Instead of forcing me to learn dry, boring exercises, he has me playing the classic country and rock songs I actually grew up listening to. Every lesson is an absolute joy, and my hands are finally making music! If you have been putting off learning for years like I did, don't wait any longer
