About Denise

My passion is inspiring learners to learn. I enjoy creating a friendly and multi-sensory environment where students feel engaged and motivated.
I am a qualified study skills tutor for learners with specific learning difficulties and I have a PGCE in teaching adults from Greenwich University. I taught for sixteen years. I also have a BSc in psychology from Roehampton University.
I have tutored a range of different students including undergraduates, postgraduates, and students at college. I have helped students on a variety of courses including nursing, law, media, promotional studies, health and social care, psychology, and sociology.
For me, it is important to provide students with someone to share their experiences and assist them in problem-solving. It is my job to encourage students to develop and achieve their full potential.
I give them the skills to surpass their own expectations in a short time. My aim is to encourage learners to gain better grades while improving their confidence to work independently by developing learning strategies.
My method of tutoring is to support the students to recognise their learning styles. This empowers them and enables them to recognise their strengths and weaknesses. We can then progress to focus on meeting their best outcomes.
Every session with the learners is bespoke, making it learner-centered. A plan and teaching method are created that supports a student’s needs whilst ensuring they have a clear role in their own learning:

Testimony
I have been working with Denise Murdoch for less than six months. We worked together at the end of my final undergraduate year.
We worked on my dissertation about mental health in Caribbean males. Denise taught me how to organise and collate my material. This organising was very useful. She also provided me with a number of assistive techniques and a number of useful strategies.
Denise has helped me to improve my grades from 2.2 to that of 2.1.
Denise’s approach was extremely friendly and easy going. However, she is very passionate about you succeeding so is very firm.
I would definitely recommend her to other undergraduate students if I feel they could do better with her support. Sherel from South London
Testimony
Denise Murdoch provided me with help when I was in a state of anxiety during my GCSEs. I was very stressed and anxious about my exams until Denise taught me an effective way to study which I still reference today during my A levels. Denise taught me about SMART planning which helped me when methodically planning my work. The planning method is remembering via the acronym SMART

S is specific this means I need to focused what I want to achieve in this plan and show how I will achieve it.

M is measurable. This questions whether I have timed myself appropriately to finish the task and how long it will take.
A is attainable. The questions whether my work will be up to standard when completed or it would be low quality.
R is realistic. This asks whether this task able to be completed effectively and if I would be happy with is.
T is timely. This is where I list all the tasks I need to do and what times. I put these next to tasks so that I cannot procrastinate at all.

We also used colors to emphasise any key ideas and to highlight relevant information which will help with revision.
I am very happy with this new way of planning as it makes my work easier to complete and using this method has caused me to complete my work at an amazing speed without procrastinating. It also means I am not as stressed about my work anymore.
