The violin is a challenging instrument. This is why it's good to start young. If you happen to have a virtuoso, three is not too early, however, most toddlers do not have quite enough dexterity for violin playing. An ideal time is around 2nd or 3rd grade after a student has learned to read fluently. Minds are wide open at this stage and ready to learn to read music and play an instrument. I specialize in working with the beginner elementary student and have taught in elementary classrooms for many years. One key to becoming a violinist is having a good ear for sound and pitch. This is often a genetic trait but can be developed through exposure to good music. As a violin student, you will begin by learning about the instrument, how to hold it, place your hands, and have good posture. I will test your musical ear by asking you to echo notes with your voice. You will need to purchase or rent an instrument that is sized specifically for you and also obtain lesson books. You will start on open strings learning how to bow and read the rhythms in music. With regular practice, you can progress quickly and be playing short songs in a few months. I also recommend that every student participate in a group ensemble, school, or community orchestra for ongoing reinforcement of skills learned in lessons.

Standard lesson length is 30 minutes. Paying for one hour is the equivalent of two lessons. Lessons are scheduled at a regular time convenient for both the student and teacher each week. If lessons are given online, it is advisable that a parent accompany younger students to assist them with technology. It is preferable to have in-person lessons when beginning to learn the violin. The first 30-minute lesson is free and for the purpose of testing the student's musical ear and aptitude for playing and also to make a plan for beginning lessons.
