About Leo
I am an undergraduate studying Philosophy, Politics and Economics at the University of Oxford, having taken Economics, Maths, Politics, and History at A Level. I am lucky to have had fascinating work experience at the Department for International Development which gave me a unique perspective on economic development and emerging economies.
I also have experience with blockchain technologies and digital currencies. If this is a topic you are eager to learn about, I am happy to run some classes on blockchain, Bitcoin, and other coins with the potential to become commonplace, such as Ripple.
My previous experience tutoring includes individuals and small groups. In my last year at school I tutored three GCSE students Economics and Maths, German, and History, helping them exceed their predicted grades and achieve an A*, an A, and an A*, respectively, so I have the experience and enthusiasm for this kind of role!

My approach to teaching is to help the student understand the key, underlying issues to a problem, or in a subject. This allows them the confidence to tackle and solve future problems.
As a tutor, I will explain theories and approaches in a step-by-step way, and illustrated with examples in the real world so you can properly understand these ideas. Learning the theory is all well and good, but in the real world theory is twisted and forgotten all the time.
When it comes to individual students, I will take the time to prepare a unique approach depending on your level. I split up the general process as follows:
1) General principles; most people know the general principles of a topic or problem. This is good, they are crucial to understanding, and far better than just learning a mark scheme, which is often a risky strategy.
2) How it would happen in theory; how would we expect this model to work in the real world? What aspects of a policy is most important?
3) Why something happened in practice; often, things do not go as we expect. Did the government prioritise different goals to what we expected? Was there another line of thought which was more likely, and how could we identified this in the future?
4) Thinking of our own examples; if you can apply new principles to your own examples, then you have mastered the topic.
An example of this is market failure.
The general principle is the a good is over/under consumed due to externalities, which distort the free market price from the socially optimum price.
How would you reduce the welfare loss in theory? The extent to which a tax reduces consumption and harms consumers depends on the elasticity of a good. This may or may not make other approaches like regulation or alternative solutions more appealing.
This involves considering what would happen in practice; by analysing the response of all the stakeholders, you have lots of avenues to pursue when writing essays.
Then, we will consider other examples and types of market failures and practise applying the theory and processes you have learnt.
With this approach, I believe you will be able to master all aspects of your course and learn a lot more along the way.
