About Sophie
I studied German and Spanish at Wadham College, Oxford, graduating in 2010.
Since then I have combined private tuition with an ambitious portfolio career as a theatre director and a development executive in television drama. Across the course of my career I have gained 16 years’ experience of supporting children, young people, and adults to learn in a diverse range of contexts, from schools, to private tuition, to high-profile cultural organisations such as the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre.
In 2021 I gained my PGCE in Secondary Modern Languages and went on to found a high-impact university access programme for schools, designed to equip pupils with the critical thinking skills and interpersonal confidence to succeed in arts and humanities subjects, opening up pathways to highly selective universities and the creative careers beyond.
Having gone from a Northern comprehensive school to Oxford University, I am passionate about unlocking young people’s potential and encouraging intellectual curiosity and a lifelong love of learning.

My approach is highly bespoke and dynamic, responding to your individual needs as a student. I can support you with reading, writing, speaking, listening and grammar. I can also offer broader cultural and literary enrichment, which can help to excite students about the subject.
My ethos is rooted in enjoyment. Joy is undervalued in education, because we can't measure it, but it is essential. My aim is to reconnect students with the pleasure of learning a language, and through this to build skills and confidence.
I offer an initial free 30 minute consultation to map out your particular needs, discuss what's important to you, and how we might work together. I then offer sessions of either 1 hour or 90 minutes.

I first met Sophie in my capacity as an external evaluator for her Beyond the Syllabus programme in Stoke-on-Trent, delivered in partnership with two local schools. In this role, I was responsible for assessing the impact of her intervention on participating pupils, providing me with direct insight into both her teaching practice and its outcomes.
Sophie is an exceptional educator whose approach is both innovative and highly effective. She draws on a diverse range of media, including literature, music, social media, documentaries, and video, to create a rich, engaging, and intellectually stimulating learning environment. Her approach enables pupils to move beyond the constraints of traditional classroom teaching, encouraging them to think independently, question assumptions, and critically engage with a wide variety of content.
Her work consistently generates very positive feedback from pupils, alongside high levels of engagement and a genuine enthusiasm for learning. What also struck me most about Sophie’s style was her ability to facilitate thoughtful discussions around challenging or controversial topics without defaulting to orthodox perspectives on contemporary issues. At a time when the proliferation of misinformation is an increasing concern within schools, she creates space for students to explore different viewpoints, evaluate sources critically, and form their own well-reasoned opinions. Importantly, Sophie places significant value on the student experience: she is highly receptive to feedback and continuously refines her curriculum to ensure that each session is bespoke, responsive, and tailored to the specific needs and interests of each student.
I would recommend Sophie without reservation to any student or institution seeking a thoughtful, creative, and deeply committed educator.I worked with Sophie over many years at the National Theatre. During that time she planned and delivered educational workshops focusing on secondary-level English and drama for young people and teachers from across the country. These workshops were always of the highest quality. Sophie has a brilliant understanding of learners' needs and shapes content to support and inspire them. I wholeheartedly recommend her thoughtful and creative teaching style.
We had the enormous good fortune to have Sophie work with our two children as a private tutor in the years leading up to GCSE. Her technical knowledge is outstanding however her true super power is how she makes children feel about learning. Intuitively she bridges the gap between the child and adult minds and creates an environment of trust, kinship and shared accomplishment. She's kind, patient and possesses immense emotional intelligence. I would recommend her without hesitation.
Sophie taught me for 2 years and was exceptional. She was very thorough and patient with my abilities as a mature student. She is exceedingly knowledgeable about language learning and has a great approach to education. Sophie was professional to the highest degree. Her lesson plans were brilliant and easy to follow. We had dedicated learning tasks after each session, and I progressed to conversational Spanish from a background of french only, in a relatively short period of time.
Sophie is an excellent communicator, sensitive to the needs of the people that she works with, and always keen to ensure that they perform to the best of their abilities. I couldn't recommend her more highly.
