About Jacob
I was an undergrad in English Language and Literature at the University of Oxford, where I got a first, and I’ve stayed there since to do a Master’s in English and now a PhD too. I always loved English (I did it at A-level too, along with Philosophy and Classical Civilisation), and I’m passionate about connecting others to the subject. I’ve had tutoring experience both online and at my university. I am used to a range of different confidence levels, from first-year undergrads in English Literature to sixth-form students from non-university backgrounds attending Oxford summer schools. I have also successfully coached students for university admissions, most recently a French student for the Oxford Master’s course in English, and I’m happy to receive enquiries about that too.

I can support all levels of English language and literature, from GCSE to Master’s level, from core skills such as essay-writing and close reading through to specific literary periods and themes. I know how important it is to adapt to the student’s personal level of confidence, and to make them feel comfortable leaving their comfort zone. For revision, I work with a mixture of exam-tailored practice (especially working through past papers) and more personalised activities to train critical thinking. One great exercise is to spend ten minutes going through a sample poem which the pupil has not seen before, in order to exercise their critical brain. These are subjects which AI cannot do for you, and where personal enthusiasm is really repaid. As a recent Oxford undergraduate, I have firsthand experience that real passion and patience are needed to bring English and history alive, as well as academic or creative writing, whether it’s at GCSE or BA level. Lessons will typically be an hour long, though I am happy to go longer or shorter on request.
