About Ciara

I grew up in London and was state-educated before attending Oxford for my BA in Philosophy and French. I've now moved to Paris to study for an MA in political theory, which I'm planning to take further for a PhD in London next year - can't seem to get enough of institutionalised education. :)

I've got (relatively recent!) personal experience in prepping for UK exams, as well as for the Oxford admissions process. I have always been passionate about access opportunities for people who worry they won't fit into intimidating institutions, and I bring that to my tutoring sessions.

The aim is for us both to enjoy sessions together. My view is that we can have fun with language and literature, all while hitting objectives and remaining focussed on what needs improving. I'm friendly, approachable, and very sensitive to the anxiety that the pressure to perform can sometimes provoke. Also happy to have a meet and greet/setting targets chat before proceeding to tutoring, to make sure you feel comfortable and we click!

About the lesson

Coucou, or hi!
I'm Ciara, a master's student who tutors English and French on the side.

I learned French at school and have taken it all the way to Paris, where I am completing a two-year French master's in political theory. I know what it's like to learn a language not just so that you can read and write in it, but so that you can live in it - and these can feel like quite different things!

A self-confessed grammar nerd, I'm happy to help with GCSE and A-level reading and writing. I can also coach accents and conversation, and have found that my perspective as a non-native fluent speaker helps a lot with explaining confusing phrasing, sounds, or the tendency to translate directly. Finally, I am a translation specialist by training, with advanced knowledge of translation theory and cohort-topping grades at undergraduate level.
