About Hugh

I am a final year PhD student at the University of Cambridge with undergraduate and masters degrees from Oxford. I support students through their applications to Humanities subjects at Oxbridge and US Ivy League universities. I take a holistic approach, preparing students not only for their applications but to think and write critically in a way that will help them excel in their school examinations and beyond through their academic and professional lives. I nurture genuine interests in their chosen subject, be it history, English, or politics, and help them read, think, and write in a manner that will prepare them for success beyond the classroom.

About the lesson

I work with students at a variety of stages, from the beginning of A-levels and IB studies to immediate preparations for UCAS and US applications. We begin working on their core skills, using their school curriculum to develop their ability to read, think, and write through essay planning and writing and exam preparation. From this, I help to hone their interests beyond school in their chosen subject, reading more widely and exposing them to academic work that will broaden and deepen their understanding of their chosen subject. Through this, they learn to think critically and write argumentatively in a way that will see them not only develop exceptional submitted work and succeed at interview but flourish once they secure their place and begin university study.

Perfect! I went to Hugh for advice on personal statement and interview conversation. He helped me significantly. I am a very nervous student who struggles with interview and conversation and Hugh outlined the process very well and put me at ease. With my personal statement he contributed ideas and helped make decisive choices that would be hard for an individual to make on how to write improve and edit their works.
