About Syrah

The NCEA english scholarship is historically pretty easy to get, but most consider the unfamiliar section a write off or a place to get some bonus points. But people forget that the unfamiliar has all your quotes right there. I got the needed excellence on that exam, but only because my unfamiliar essay was an E8.

As someone who studies philosophy and communications, I love to share my thoughts and findings with anyone who can listen, and also somehow take a McDonalds ad and turn it into some thought provoking social commentary. Don’t worry, I won’t subject you to that, but I am someone who naturally digs deep.

I have read countless philosophers who don’t make sense, critically analysed all kinds of content and, in my advanced creative writing course, theorised about why a letter is capitalised in a poem. Reading into, onto, around and through texts is a skill I’ve had since birth, I reckon, but with my Uni experience, it’s improved further.

Knowing where to look, what you’re looking for and how to find it is what I can teach you in order to figure out what you think a text is trying to say. Making an argument and writing it well are what philosophy is all about, and you can make an argument out of anything if you’ve got your evidence (trust me, I’d know).

So, if you’re looking for the skills to go into an exam with mediocre essays and a dream, and come out with $500, I can help. You can capitalise off the section where all the info you need is handed to you, and if you’ve got the rest sorted, getting that scholarship will be a piece of cake. Otherwise, I can be a brutal editor who can give you honest feedback on your practice exams.

The unfamiliar is an easy section to score points if you dislike memorising 25 quotes, you just need a guide of where to start and end. A text can mean anything if you know how to argue it, so finding evidence is all you really need.

The best way to understand something is by talking about it, so I’d give you a text to read beforehand and have you explain its meaning to me verbally. Convince me through the evidence you found and rhetoric the text uses. I’d then give you five minutes to make a plan with what you’ve got which we can go through together.

I can email you the text an hour, a day or just 30 mins before we meet depending on your confidence. Our sessions would be around 45 minutes, and I’d have you flesh out that plan into a commentary which I can critique. From there, we can focus on what you struggle with and shorten the time you have to read, write and plan. In terms of practice essays, you can send me whatever you have and I can share my feedback with you in the following session.

As someone who studied for five minutes before the schol exam, coming up with ideas on the spot is my speciality and I can help you do the same! Also, feel free to send me your other essays to edit as I am obsessed with editing in general.
