About Kareema
I am Kareema Colson, a current Oboe Performance student at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music. I am a member of the Stamps Woodwind Quintet, which has performed in masterclasses for world-class artists such as WindSync and Time for Three and has been a semi-finalist in several chamber music competitions. I am also an alumna of the Interlochen Arts Academy, where I performed with the orchestra on tour in New York City and played in a side-by-side concert with the New York Philharmonic. My past teachers include Jonathan Gentry, Dane Philipsen, and Robert Weiner, with additional instruction from Martin Schuring and Emily Pailthorpe. Alongside my performance training, I have completed extensive coursework in music theory and ear training at both Interlochen and the Frost School of Music. This strong academic background, combined with my experience applying theory directly to performance and chamber music, equips me to explain theoretical concepts clearly and relate them to real musical situations. Music is one of the most important parts of my life, and my goal as a teacher is to give students all the tools—technical, theoretical, and artistic—so they can enjoy music as much as I do.

In my lessons, I help students strengthen their understanding of music concepts while supporting them with homework, projects, and performance preparation. My teaching style is interactive and tailored to each student, breaking down complex ideas into clear, practical steps.
A typical lesson starts with a quick check-in on assignments or questions, then moves into focused instruction—whether on theory, ear training, score analysis, or performance skills—followed by guided exercises and feedback.
As both an active performer and a student at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, I bring real-world insight and efficient study strategies. My lessons are open to all levels, from beginners to advanced students, with the goal of building confidence, mastery, and enjoyment of music.
