About Lauren

A bit about myself…
I am a current Master’s student at UCL, studying Anthropology, and I recently graduated from Homerton College, Cambridge after three years studying Human, Social and Political Sciences. I am an avid gym goer and love the outdoors, and I am originally from Newcastle but am now based in London.
As a young person myself (aged 21) I understand the pressures facing today’s youth; in current times of upheaval and uncertainty, there is nothing more important than a good education. Youth mental health is a key interest for me in my academic research; I am especially suited to tutor those who may be struggling with school attendance or mental health and neurodivergence, as these are all issues I myself have faced in my own school days. As a former school refuser who ended up at Cambridge, I hope to bring my lived experience of the challenges current students face to this role as a tutor, and be an inspiring, understanding and friendly role model for students.

About the lesson

I am a Cambridge graduate and UCL master’s student with a true passion for education and learning. My approach to teaching is centred on my belief that reading and writing skills are not only useful to pass rote exams—although this is a major concern for many students, English can prepare you for the real world out there, not just the classroom. Alongside tried and tested teaching resources, I will aim to support students with reading comprehension and textual analysis for real-life situations: analysing texts related to current and past world events, practising free writing, and applying literary skills to real life situations are as important as rote learning to me.
Having said this, I also believe that a good education in classical literature such as Shakespeare can be hugely important for real world success. I will endeavour to relate the characters within these classic texts to students' real life, trying to make English a subject that they love for life, not just for school.
