Preparation - for me - is key. Tutoring sessions are most efficient and cost-effective when a clearly-defined outcome is identified. As a result, any consultation between myself and the tutee is free - only planned/scheduled sessions are charged for.
I have 25 years of experience as a teacher, trainer, facilitator and lecturer within the education, training and skills development industry in South Africa. I have an honours degree in Geography & Environmental Studies, English and Education from WITS University.
Michael is a qualified and experienced educator, with over 25 years of experience within the education, training and skills development industry.
Michael obtained a Bachelor of Arts (In Education) integrated honours degree from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1992. He also obtained a certificate, with distinction, in Public Relations & Communication from PRISA / Damelin Management School in 1999. Michael is a firm believer in lifelong learning and has attended a broad number of CPD short courses and workshops during his career.
In 1996, after teaching at St Dominic’s Academy and Empangeni High School in KwaZulu-Natal, Michael was offered the opportunity to enter the field of corporate and industry training. Here he taught or lectured at several different training providers in Johannesburg, before joining Ericsson SA as senior training specialist.
After being retrenched along with 11 000 other employees worldwide, he decided to start his own skills development consultancy, which he successfully managed for 9 years. During this time, he was able to garner a wealth of information regarding education, training and skills development in the southern African context.
After the death of his wife from cancer, Michael sold his business and relocated to KwaZulu-Natal where he was able to follow his passion of teaching at a secondary school level, heading up the Geography Department at Southcity Christian College. Here he successfully grew the Humanities component of the school’s offering, before being offered the opportunity to relocate to the Western Cape in 2015.
Michael was employed as head of department for the Human and Social Sciences Department and subject head for Geography at Elkanah House high school, a leading independent school located in Bloubergstrand, Cape Town. He managed five educators in the GET and FET phases, for Social Sciences, Geography and History. The department made significant inroads into growing the relevance of the humanities subjects offered at the school; when Michael left to re-enter the world of HET training as a freelance trainer and facilitator, more than half of the matric cohort were taking Geography or History as one of their elective subjects for the IEB NSC examinations.
Michael has been a sub-examiner at the Independent Examinations Board for nearly a decade, is a member in good standing with South African Council for Educators and was a founding member of the Association of Skills Development Facilitation of South Africa. In his free time, Michael enjoys adventure motorcycling, writing and gardening as leisure activities with which to maintain a healthy work-life balance.
