About Lydia

My name’s Lydia, I’m 26 years old. I am pursuing a master in applied linguistics in Madrid. I was brought up in an exclusively French-speaking family, therefore, my native language is French. However, I also speak Arabic and English fluently and I am intermediate at German and Spanish. I started learning Mandarin a few months ago, it is challenging, but fun!

About the lesson

My lessons are presented in a PowerPoint which first introduces the topic (If the student is a beginner, the explanation may need to be written in English.) I then proceed by explaining each rule slowly, and sometimes ask my students to explain it to me as if I were the student and them, the teacher. I also ask them to try to create creative sentences with the vocabulary learned. Since French and English are very similar, I try to find the equivalent of a grammar rule or a word when I can, and because many students are Chinese, I started learning Mandarin and was surprised to find that French and Chinese share many resemblances. Yet, every language is unique and it is essential to make the student understand this. Therefore, I do my best to make them curious about learning French. It is a rich and elegant language. It undeniably has many quirks and complexities, but if taught correctly, the students will perceive the language as unique instead of difficult. When they reach a certain level, I generally switch to speaking exclusively French. We start discussing diverse topics, watching small videos and cartoons and learn French songs. I also try to include French history and geography lessons. A few months ago, I came up with a concept ‘Did you know?’ where we learn scientific facts in French!
