I focus first on the basics, making sure they understand the pronouns and the basic verbs. I make sure their pronunciation is satisfactory so they will not have a problem being understood.
Then we start working on creating basic sentences, based on the verbs and pronouns they have recently learned, adding common vocabulary words that are relative to their daily lives.
