About Maria

Hello, my name is Maria, I am a native Russian speaker and a teacher of Russian as foreign language.

Although I don't have an academic degree in teaching Russian, I've spent a couple of years helping people all around the world from US to China with learning and understanding my language.

A lot of people consider Russian to be one of the most difficult languages to learn, but in my opinion, that is not entirely true. Russian is not that difficult once you understand "how it works". That is the reason why in my lessons I try to explain the logic and rules of the language, not just make people to blindly remember words and phrases without paying attention to what exactly they are memorizing and why.

I mostly practise individual approach to each student, but as a reference I use the study plan for Russian as foreign language offered by Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation.

My classes are divided into three levels (plus "0 sub-level" where we learn how to read and make sounds):

0.1. (first free lesson) Cyrillic alphabet. Basics of phonetics, Russian phonemes (sounds) and pronunciation. You will learn how to read in Russian. Letters like Ы and rolling R will stop frightening you and you will be able to roar at people in no time (R-r-r-r-r!).

0.2. Syllables, accents and intonations. Reduction of vowels (o-a, e-я). Correction of pronunciation.

1. Beginner / Elementary - is taught in English (!) because I believe that teaching Russian in Russian from the very beginning will lead to nothing but frustration and many misunderstandings.

At the end of Elementary course you will be able to communicate with Russians on basic topics like yourself, your job, family and hobbies, ask for help or information, describe people and objects and much, much more. Specially for British students I got an entire module dedicated to different ways of apologizing and thanking people in Russian.

2. Intermediate and Upper-Intermediate - English is going to be used for explaining grammar and complex concepts, but around 50% of communication will be in Russian (the more you learn, the less English there will be left).

3. Advanced - is taught in Russian. Advanced grammar, writing, syntax and etc.
