About Sophie

Hello, I’m Sophie.

I am a native Mandarin speaker, Mandarin instructor and cultural program facilitator based in Beaconsfield, Québec.

Before teaching in Canada, I spent many years working in international business, procurement and cross-cultural communication. That experience shaped the way I teach: language should be practical, contextual and useful in real life.

I currently teach private Mandarin students in the West Island and have developed my own structured beginner curriculum, Mandarin for Traveller's & Everyday Life.

I will also be delivering Mandarin language and Chinese cultural programming with the City of Beaconsfield in 2027, including introductory programming and a beginner Mandarin course.

I speak Mandarin, English and French, which allows me to explain concepts from different linguistic perspectives and support learners who may find Mandarin pronunciation, tones or sentence structure unfamiliar.

My teaching style is structured and attentive, but also conversational and practical. I want students to leave each lesson feeling that they can actually use something they have learned.

About the lesson

Mandarin should become something you can use, not simply something you study.

My private lessons are designed particularly for adults who are beginning Mandarin for the first time, as well as returning learners who studied previously and would like to start again with greater confidence.

We build practical Mandarin through real-life situations: introductions and conversation, pronunciation and tones, numbers and time, restaurants, shopping, travel, transportation and everyday communication.

Lessons are personalized according to your level and goals. Depending on your needs, we can work with pinyin, Chinese characters, listening, speaking, reading and writing, while keeping communication at the centre of the lesson.

I use structured original teaching materials and incorporate Chinese culture naturally into our lessons, so that you understand not only what to say, but how and when to say it.

Complete beginners are very welcome. If you have studied Mandarin before, we can begin by assessing what you already remember and build from there.

Lessons are available in person in the West Island and online. Explanations can be provided in English or French.

Details

Complimentary 30-minute first meeting: an introduction to Mandarin, discussion of your learning goals and level, and a short sample lesson. Regular lessons are 60 minutes.
