About Umi
Hi, I’m Umi, a Japanese-Canadian native Japanese speaker and University of Toronto student based in Canada.
Because I also understand English-speaking environments, I can explain Japanese clearly and patiently for students who are just starting. I especially enjoy teaching people who are interested in anime, manga, travel, Japanese culture, and real everyday conversation.
My goal is to make Japanese feel less intimidating and more enjoyable, while helping each student build confidence step by step.

My lessons are designed for beginners who want to learn practical Japanese for anime, manga, travel, and real conversation. As a native Japanese speaker and University of Toronto student, I can explain Japanese in a clear way while also understanding how English speakers think and learn.
In a typical lesson, we start with your goal, such as travel phrases, anime expressions, pronunciation, basic grammar, or simple conversation. Then we practice useful words and sentences together, and I help you speak naturally instead of just memorizing textbook phrases.
My teaching style is friendly, patient, and flexible. I focus on making Japanese feel less intimidating and more fun, especially for students who are just starting. Lessons are best for beginners, casual learners, anime and manga fans, and people preparing for a trip to Japan.
My goal is to help you enjoy Japanese and actually use it in real situations.
